Why do governments not support EVs ?

Good one Jacko ! Some great points there. Let me throw it back though.... Re NEVs..... Step through coffins (mopeds / scooters) are allowed on our roads so please don't tell me that any NEVs are dangerous as an excuse to stop them. I would envisage NEVs being allowed on suburban 50kmph roads. This w...

Hi folks, newbie here.

Ian, don't forget to read AWD rather than 4WD. Real performance requires AWD to get the power to the road and control the car. True this consumes power but there is no point in having power if you can't get it to the road. 4WD is usually a heavier construction designed for off road abuse than AWD. F...

Why do governments not support EVs ?

Sorry, tongue in cheek comment - banning hummers is a comment about our society and the lack of government incentive to be environmentally responsible. You are correct, we don't need to ban them, just tax them to the hilt and offer incentives to other more cool things. Let's not call it banning, let...

Why do governments not support EVs ?

I am often asked the question.... Why do governments not support EVs ? http://forums.aeva.asn.au/smileys/smiley13.gif Here are my thoughts on the matter.... There are several parts to the answer..... 1.Vested interest. The world's economy is based on oil and the biggest companies with the most influ...

To all, I think Stuart's "couple of things" also need to be put in perspective ! Point 1 Sorry Stuart, I disagree. But don't get me wrong. Anything EV is better than petrol..... You see I went to ev challenges in Melbourne 20 years ago and the technology was much the same as you are running today al...

Swan TAFE eV Challenge 2007

I've just been looking at the rules for 2008 (I too drove in last year's event) http://evchallenge.swantafe.wa.edu.au/default.asp Somehow I feel that the event has had water tipped on it by limiting the Wh of batteries to a "lead acid with peukert effect" equivalent. Along with the $1200 budget limi...

This is all good ! Can we make all compliances testable at scrutineering time ? e.g. rather than saying for rollbar "able to withstand dropping the vehicle upside down from a height if 1 foot (whatever a foot is) with the driver inside" (you are never actually going to do this http://forums.aeva.asn...

Ian, correct, thus my comment about arranging the pack as 50 x 120V strings with indiviual current monitor.
NiMH are still very viable and I would not rule them out.

BTW Lipo will pass Lithium Ion wet cells very soon.

AA Nihm's

There is a lot of info on the net about energy requirements. There is a spreadsheet on the waeva.asn.au site that may help. Just roughly, 1000kg vehicle to cruise at 100kph may require 10-15kW to get up Greenmount (5deg) 30kW to accelerate 0-100 in 10 sec 60kW to travel 100km at 300Wh/km = 30kWh of ...

Yep, it has been done and it works. The thousands of battery connections mean a lot of work though. If you consider the required battery capacity of say 10 to 20 kWh for a vehicle, then looking at the volts and Ah rating you get a feel for what is involved. Consider a 120V system and 12kWh capacity ...

100+ MPG Prius

This is an exercise in stating the obvious... Obviously the prius if fitted with a real battery pack can get plenty of MPG for the first x km driven on already charged batteries. So !!!! this is not rocket science. Shame is it will still need to start its IC motor if loads or speed are high. (basica...

Now I guess you have all heard about the GM Chief Rick Wagoner saying that global oil supply has peaked. (read... has lifted head out of sand) But don't worry, you still won't get an electric car from them until 2010 or later. Now if they say the demand for oil will increase 70% over the next 20 yea...

Interesting EV story on Youtube

Maybe the lesson is... convert your own EV or buy one from someone who has converted one. Don't try to be a big company, you don't know what forces you are dealing with. At this stage if you tackle them head on you will lose. EVs will win out soon. We just need to get more on the road so the pressur...

Swan TAFE eV Challenge 2007

http://forums.aeva.asn.au/smileys/smiley1.gif EVs in racing would have a hard time as they are 100 years (in the performance department) behind ICE unless you had a big budget. Hey Alex, Keep doing plenty of homework before you start. What ever budget you thing of starting with, it will cost more in the end.... and don't build an electric car thinking it is going to save money. But you will get lots of pleasure out of it ! There is no 'most suitable car' though some are ea...
