Have you looked at Kickstarter?

I'm sure you would find people to fund it. How much cash do you need?

Best electric motorbike for L and P plater?

Are you looking to have this road registered?
If so you will not get a mountain bike approved. For one I don't think there are any "DOT" approved tyres available for MTB's.
Bicycles already fall into a category that was never designed to be road registered. Changing that would be almost impossible.

FIA Formula E Championship

15 minute races with an allowable ~50kW/h of battery (If using off the shelf Lipo), sounds alright.
Sounds like all four wheels driven with separate axial flux motors might be the winning combo.

AMP20 Lithium Ion Prismatic Cell

Replace-ability of dud cells is a good point and not one I had considered. I've got a fair amount of experience laser welding which is one of the reasons I'm leaning to that method. FYI Chris, Physics has a laser welder. It welds just about anything (I've welded Titanium to brass amongst other metal...

Are both tabs aluminium? I read on endless sphere that one is ali and one is nickel plated copper.
I'm not a fan of the clamp idea to join cells, it is too bulky for my plans. If I buy some I plan to laser weld the tabs so need to know what each is made from.

Brake testing

Surely there is a smaller public testing facility somewhere for that sort of thing?! Is this scooter expected to hit 200km/h or something? So this means the conversion needs to be completed (ie running engine) before the brakes can be tested. Hmmm leaving the braking system till last, not the way I'...

I'm guessing that situation would only occur when installing a hub motor. As that is the only situation I could see where the braking systems would change from the original bikes brakes.
That is an expensive hit to take if converting a sub $2000 scooter!

Grass roots electric racing class

I think karts are the most accessible format. Chassis' are standardised and readily available and battery space is limited which means cheap convert. I voted for single seat race cars though because I think building cars that are unique to electric racing would be a good idea. Sort of like "Aussie c...

Karts sound pretty good to me. Not too expensive, you could do efficiency challenges as well as flat out racing, and they're accessible. If we want to go to something bigger then Formula Vee sounds pretty good. Funny I was thinking the exact same thing. Start out with karts and move to formula Vee....

I Agree 100%. Showing electric cars as "fast" would do wonders for public opinion. Low speed efficiency trials reinforce the "electric vehicles are slow" opinion.

Australia’s first electric supercar!

The question of how good EV's are for the environment is complicated by a number of factors, but it's safe to say that they can't be worse than ICE equivalents! Comparing, a 50 cc scooter to a car, isn't very realistic. A 50 cc ICE is in relevant terms very, very pollutant! You could, for very litt...

Australia’s first electric supercar!

Because outside of a few hobbyists, there is no public support for EV's. This is partly due to the realatively cheap price of gasoline and LPG, but mostly because of the lack of an effective lobby group.    I'm not interested in fueling or joining the personal argument going on in this thread but, ...

Expanding the EV challenge to include a high performance division would be great. I've always viewed the EV challenge to be more aimed at high school students. That and the restrictions on speed and small battery packs are why I've never entered. If there was a category that allowed 20kg or more of ...

Karts would be a good place to start. The cost involved in building/converting a passenger vehicle to electric would limit the number of people competing to a select few. Karts mean less batteries (cheaper), easier to get to the track (more convenient and cheaper), and cheaper controllers and motors...
