EV Run to Canberra AGM 2009

For those coming from Melbourne I have charging lined up approx every 100ks. Im not catering for lesser range EVs. Mine should be able to do 160ks now as I have 50Ahrs of "spiral pure lead" as well as 90Ahrs TS. Charging two off NG3s on separate leads. Back up power is the new Honda Cyclo generator ...

Changing an induction motor voltage

Here is an idea for a cheap dyno. Find a 3 ph IM of rating close to what you are testing. Set the stator on a balanced cradle with a spring balance on a 1 metre arm. Connect rotor to subject motor. Gradually apply DC to stator either in delta or star. This will cause a short in the rotor bars. Measu...

This indicates that the cell is only 50% charged if charging at 0.5C if you cut the charge at 3.7V. Need to see a family of curves for diff charging rates.

Ethan in Germany with industrial AC and LiPO

I have only 46 LiPs in my humble Charade and it is series DC (AC folk heard to scoff in disgust). I dont use a BMS. I monitor the weakest cell & cut off charge when it hits 4.25V. The problem is that the weakest cell changes occasionally. Occasionally I go around with a 4V power supply & bring all c...

I have a similar plan to AC motor for generating DC power from PM 3 ph alternators. I have two to agonize over. One is from a 4 nozzle pelton turbine & the other from a disastrously designed wind turbine. Each were 1 kW. I intend breaking out the winding and parallelling them via diodes feeding neg ...

Veldonas ph 0393120888 in Sunshine (Melb) has a range of Japanese used Diesel engines complete with radiators air filters etc. One I looked at 6kW at 3200RPM is a 2 cyl type ZB400BBS Kubota and weighs 60kg dry. This is a little too small for me. The next one is a 600cc and is 50% more powerful and w...

Definite Starters
If I dont have expressions of interest by 7th July for Victorian EV owners wanting to go to ACT Ill simply organise my own trip travelling alone, no support vehicle or passenger but a backup generator for company. Ill leave other states to organise their own.

Interesting test I did a 50k run at 50-60 kph av with plenty of traffic lights. AT KW's factory I charged using my two Zivans and it took 1 hour to replace the energy used. Anyone doing this trip is going to have to something like this I should think. Go faster youll get there sooner but take longer...

Why are you into EV's

My EV is a pleasant way of driving. Just leave it in 3rd & away you go. Its primary power source is our 6kW PV array so it is truly solar powered. 100ks driving is easily done on one charge.

Id vote for 15A and a 20A three phase perhaps in ratio of 4 :1. You could for example have 3 NG3s which could run from 3 ph. I have 2 NG3s which weigh 5.5 kgs each so 3 ph is no great prob. You could make a 3ph to 3 single phases so could feed your chargers from whatever is available.

AEVA at Wonthaggi The AEVA was invited to display EVs at Wonthaggi for the HPV 24hr endurance competition which started at 12PM on 21st March and ran for 24hours. My story is concerned with my EV side of the weekend. I decided to drive the Daihatsu from Sandringham to Wonthaggi 119ks via Bass Hwy wi...

Skynet 5V 15A & 12V 4A from 240VAC. I have a a small number of these left from another project. If you dont use the 12V output it will easily put out 25A at 5V. By cutting one resistor it runs at 4.3V and I use this for equalising my Thunderskys every month instead of using a BMS. Bare board $75 wit...

I havent bought my set yet and may experiment with a Robins DY41 1 cyl first. If I do the No Trees crossing next year Ill need at least 10kW. Might be Yan or Kub. All 50Hz alternators are too heavy. Higher frequency eg 400Hz driven at high revs is what will get the weight down. Dont need 50Hz. PM al...

Recharge time if 90Ahrs is used will be around 3 hrs not 5 as I have 2 Zivans and will ask for 2 separate circuits to charge from. I was originally going to use 3 Zivans (and 3 ph) but this an extravagance, might go a bad boy auto or variac plus bridge rect though with earth spike for EV. Dormans ar...

It will need two separate 10A circuits. The AC current is more like 15A but a 10A GPO will handle it as the 2.5mm2 wiring can do 20A. They do get warm though. Id say my combined 132Ahr pack goes to 20% remaining so needs around 150whrs per k. More like 200 ex grid. I hope to get this down with some ...

It would work this way: If I found fuel stops would let me charge as well as get fuel, Id turn up with near flat traction battery & fuel both, but it might involve only 200ks per day in battery mode because each 100ks needs 3 hours charging even with my 2 NG3s (33 Amps). Day 1 drive 100ks on bats 1....

The original DC drive developed so much torque that it didnt need to engage the decomp lever. Ive never tested the set to just turn the engine with no compression. My plan is to see if I can drive to Perth next year (never done it before) with my EV and charge at any convenient spot. I wont try & or...

This 3 ph would have enough torque to rotate the Diesel which is a Robins Subaru DY41 1 cyl with decomp lever. It actually lets the engine do a number of revs before allowing the exhaust valve to close. You must be able to get VSD to suit US voltages (1 ph 115 60Hz) and motors wound for same. In Aus...

Thanks for explanation. Ive got a wind turbine PM alternator that I want to run as a high speed engine driven machine for my EV range extender. It is one of life's mysteries how the Prius & Insight start the engines.
I thought synchronous motors were not able to be started directly from AC power. The only possibility is a ramped up wave ie 0 V 0 Hz to operating volts. Any explanation?

Charger Suggestions I was going to use a single cylinder Diesel but have decided that this is too harsh a power source and will use a 2 cyl or three cyl. The Kubota D902 3 cylinders 900cc & 13.5kW @ 3200RPM would enable travel for my EV at 90km/hr and require 3 litres per hour assuming 90% conversio...

I cannot say what a Charade used to do on petrol. For my tests on the elec Charade & the Insight I use my normal economic driving techniques The EV is not normally driven much faster than 75kph when distance near its range is involved. The Insight about 80-100kph. The latter has a lean burn feature ...

I have a Honda Insight that is very light at about 800kgs. It will do 2.9litres per 100ks. At current prices that is $2.90 for 100ks. Now my EV as I said needed 16kWhrs to do 100ks-mains electricity $0.15 per kWhr $2.40 too close to the price of the petrol car. No wonder car companies weren't intere...

Regardless of the range your EV will do, you still have to replace the energy. So to use my own EV as an example, for Melb to Canb I will be taking with me 3 off NG3s able to run off 3 ph power or 3 separate single ph circuits. From a run I did this week, 105 ks on one charge it required 16.6kWhrs t...
