Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

Since I added my two bobs worth to the winter solar discussion, I may as well post an update on the aftermarket iMiEV saga. On the whole I am reasonably happy with what I have , 120 km range on a warm day if driven straight after full charge. The cooler weather and a bit more degradation of the LIYU...

Re: jonescg's home battery storage system

Winter is here. We now have to start paying for some electricity. It used to be for us that we'd just eat into our credit over winter. But now with two EVs, I suspect that will change. We never did get a cheque from our utility provider. 😭 I can't really complain, though. I actually asked (AG...

Re: MiEV Melbourne, potential regen braking issue

I think the iMiEV 12V system is very basic - constand high voltage when operating (or soon after connecting charge). No 'smart altenator' activity I have seen. Correct. DC-DC converter is charging the auxiliary battery as soon as ignition is on "READY" or the traction battery is charging. 14.xx V, ...

Re: MiEV Melbourne, potential regen braking issue

I also wonder if the thorttle calibration is off (throttle position returning an out of bounds reading due to 0 point drift) Hmm.. how would I check this? That is a good hint. The problem appears to be less pronounced when driving in E mode, and avoiding it to go into regen is easier in that mode, ...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

Might pay to make that fuse a bit more than 'low'. Perhaps rated to 50 amps or something? It wouldn't need to be a high voltage fuse as the potential across it should only be in the tens of volts at worst, but it would need to be a fast acting one. The potential between the two packs has never been...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

The different chemistries shouldn't be a problem as long as you don't exceed either of the voltage limits. If the voltages are not the same then one will be underutilized. For better or worse, the two packs are combined by a relay designed for EVs that energises when the main pack relays are on. Ad...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

Hey Andreas, Does your iMiEV have Chademo? yes. Are you brave enough? No, not yet anyway! I have fast charged the original pack only once, but the previous owner did it all the time. The aftermarket pack I charged twice at Monash Uni Chademo to check if it is working, but since the battery was abou...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

I assume you have two packs connected in parallel. So if they had different impedance then one would put out more energy than the other. Let's say we have 2 packs of the same capacity and one has 1Ohm and the other 0.5Ohm internal resistance. We put a load of say 10A. So the voltage will sag to 3.3...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

Dead as a dodo. Does not even light a tiny torch light globe. I still have no idea why this cell died and coincidentally showed up as I paralleled the two packs the first time (with practicably no voltage difference ie no current shock). I replaced that cell with the one spare I had left and charge...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

I doubt that the shock from connecting two packs with 2 or 3 volt difference could kill a cell, but maybe I am wrong again? I agree, paralleling the packs with such a small voltage difference would not have caused much current to flow, much less killed a cell. I thought you measured the 25 V on the...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

I wonder if that one bad cell invalidates all or most of the knowledge we have from your experiment. It might have been holding back your whole pack. Yes that is he most sad part of the story. But I guess if that was the case you would have noticed its voltage being different to the others. Both sc...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

It's even more complicated than that, because the curves vary by temperature, current, phase of the moon, etc. Here are the "official" curves, taken from a Yuasa research paper: Yes , fair enough, but I was commenting for drivers in Australia who rarely encounter prolonged temperatures of minus 10°...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

If you think to use the voltage value you must to refer to a table Li-ion Discharge Voltage Curve Typical.jpg it seems not linear at all I think the discharge curve is more like this in real life and therefore voltage becomes more meaningful in determining SoC. Still not the alpha and omega but as ...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

The coulomb count works both ways in and out. If the count reaches 100% and the battery keeps taking current in the count stops at 100%. With the NMC 60Ah cells both the SoC (control) and (display) sometimes read up to 105% on the scanners or the EvBatMon app. The same goes for discharge. Once the ...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

The coulomb counting is done by the BMS. It then sends the calculated SOC to the car. So it only counts the Ah in,and ignores the Ah used? The CanIon app does show Wh in and out when driving and recharging, I should have checked if this also shows when charging,I do that tomorrow. I did notice that...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

The car uses the reported SOC to decide when to go to turtle mode and when to stop driving. The SOC reading on the dash displays the reported SOC. So the can bridge will give you the correct SOC display and the correct behavior. Yes all of that is most probably true until it isn't. Because as I pos...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

The Prius extended range battery is 270 fully charged, the system closes the contactor at around 198v mark in the traction battery and opens it again when the traction battery reaches 228vdc. It will continue to do this clunk on/off until the extended range battery drops to roughly 200v at which po...

That current sensor (and much else) looks rather different to the one in the iMiEV: http://myimiev.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=4718&p=41509#p41509 And a lot of things are different between the 2010 and later(2012) models. For instant the contactors on mine are nowhere near the same as the ones o...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

Max cell 3.40 V ; min cell 2.78 V Yikes. Are you able to source replacement LEV50 cells where you are? Is it just one or two that are bad? They are no worse than they were before I took them out and put them back. What caused them to drain that far is because the Ah capacity is wrong, and I just wa...

Re: Minicab MiEV support with charger/blown capacitors

Liam thinks that with the box riding on top, it does not fit into the available space. That might be the easiest of the problems to overcome, as you hint below. I reckon if the plugs are the same and the wires appear the same colour, the physical bit should be able to be overcome. But the real ques...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

Now the exciting question is what to do with all the NMC modules? I probably hook them up and see what happens if I charge them connected to the car. Similar to what Riore did with his van (see pages 15 + this thread). If that causes no issue, I might fit the cells behind the front seats,(making it...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

On a nother note, the car is no doubt made to a very high standard, but some of way things are bolted together are strange. Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

Well, it sounds like the pack is okay and your fault lies elsewhere. Edit to add, You'll need to check the resistance to chassis of things like the chademo port, AC compressor, ptc heater etc. Fingers crossed it's not a dicky BMU Well, well, well, who would have thought that I was at fault!!! I forgot...
