Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

Andreas, sorry but that's not what I'm asking. I want to know what happens to Graeme/Mike's car with the 94 Ah cells. Yes, we are on the same page, I too would like to know how the "brain" in the iMiEV restricts the use of more cell capacity. Is it happening at charging or at discharge, or both? My...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

Do you have a handle on how far it'll actually drive until power gets reduced? (i.e., not just lighting the turtle, but actually acting like one.) After the 12%/10% turtle light, I believe that when the estimated SOC gets to 0%, the car stops dead. Like a turtle 🐢 on its back :o I test drove my iMi...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

Just to clarify, I use the i909 to check the pack( for some reason the Canion app while still correctly reads and displays some date, the individual cell volts and temperatures are locked. The i909 is clumsy to read, but has much more info than Canion or EvBatMon, reads all pack and cell voltages, m...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

I feel its using the lower part but I really need to examine it closer.. I agree the lifespan should be great even as it is now .. but much better too if we can get to the other 45Ah. Can you check the cell volt shortly before it stops charging? Or even more valuable would be to know if the cell ba...

Re: Nuggetgalore's iMiEV charger failure

Car now comes up Ready and the charger works, but the coolant motor won't run, so I daren't run it for more than a few seconds. I remember at one stage when the OBC was removed, I turned on the "ignition" to observe indicators and the coolant pump ran then, even though there was no coolant in the r...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

Something else I should have thought of a long time ago but only realised recently. With the cells standing up rather than laying on their sides, the BMS boards are not protected any more from the cold cooling air by being hidden away between the modules. This may have several issues, one is the cool...

Re: jonescg's home battery storage system

I can agree with that. A while back I got a power meter and started tracking down drains and found that if I left everything on my entertainment unit (TV, VCR, DVD etc) on 'standby' it pulled 850W . On the plus side I've always turned the main switch off on devices, the meter just justified ...

MUT 3

I am going to replace the LEV50 cells in my iMiEV with LiYuan 60 Ah cells. We still do not know if it works or how successful it will be, but I want to find out as much as possible of what the state of mine and other iMiEVs packs are. The i909 is ok and so is EvBatMon and CanIon, but none can reset ...

Re: jonescg's home battery storage system

Correct, they don't care what phase carried how much current (although it can be determined). They only care about total energy imported or exported and at what time of day. Some distributors have a phase unbalance limit. But your export limit is probably too small for that to apply, if it would ap...

Re: Nuggetgalore's iMiEV charger failure

Heh. I found the plug (opposite the inlet hose from the inverter) and tried to remove it with a 6 mm Allen key. Nothing doing. Having broken an Allen key many years ago in the same circumstances (and still wearing the scar), I abandoned the attempt. The plug and the inlet hose are at the same level...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

What would locktite do to the resistance in the connection between the stud and the thread? Would that matter? I guess the current will mainly pass through the contact between the lug on the end of the cable and the metal plate around the stud? The alu contact face on the cells is about 18 x 37 mm....

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

Flexible links would be ideal, yes, but they are a custom construction and I hadn't got that far. The solid module-module links would be fine provided the modules themselves were secured well using some bracketry. The slight height difference won't be too big a deal, but it might call for some slig...

Re: New owner, old i-Miev, CHAdeMO issues!

Thanks Andreas.. What about the OBD bluetooth ones with an app? Any of them work well? It charges fine on the mains and quite happy to carry on using that for now... Cani0n is (I think ) still free and available. You need a compatible dongle, same as for EvBatMon. It worked fine on my Android phone...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

new cell layout.jpg This looks to be the least worst termination arrangement for the 60 Ah prismatic cells. It allows for the modules to be terminated at the forward end, meaning a lot less copper than otherwise. Fly-wired to each cell top will make the BMS happy. The BMS should sit on top with a m...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

The 60Ah cells are all now at exactly 3.63 V paralleled up. I am still waiting for some material to arrive before I can assemble the modules. I probably should charge them up to a similar pack voltage as the original pack V is at rest the time I swap them over so the BMS is less likely to get confus...

tonyw wrote: Mon, 24 Aug 2020, 09:13 Is there a secret to removing the big spade lug connectors (such as those connecting to the TXs, etc), or should I just pull harder?
I know they were very tight to pull off, not totally sure though if gripping them at the right spots further down helped.

Thanks for the reply. I imagine then that is the reason as mine is a 2011. At the moment I have no way to check what is the best way do you advise ie which Obd device / app to use... and if the case is there much success in swapping the rogue cells out or is it something just best living with as i ...

Re: Nuggetgalore's iMiEV charger failure

Is your i909 phone-based, laptop-based or stand-alone? It is standalone, I wished it was computer based, my guess it would be much easier to get to the wanted information and record it. The info to bleed the cooling system is in the iMiEV workshop manual: 14 -COOLING ...... COOLANT CHANGE..... COOL...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

Prius packs get rebuilt all the time by combining the best cells of multiple packs. There's no reason that it won't work in an imiev but sadly the gains are probably not worth the labour involved. On your chart you have the top cell at 3.78V and the bottom cell at 3.72V. If you were to keep going u...

Re: Aftermarket iMiEV battery upgrade project

Know that the difference in actual charge between a Voc of 3.1V and 2.75V is … well, I believe the technical term is "not a lot." Yes ,judging from the graph(s) of the LEV50 and LiYuan 60 Ah cells, at around 3.5V they go down very sharply. Which temps me to ask a hypothetical question for the brain...

jonescg, How do you plan to access the top of the cells in your cabinet to do manual voltage readings given the opting for a non cell voltage readout BMS ? I was wondering that too. That cabinet is a tight fit. I am glad that I can easily access the tops of my Avass cells to check from time to time ...

I'd be also looking at the cell Voltages at low SoC (at, say, two blobs). If possible, monitor cell Voltages under load, too. Table one is at nearly full charge , table two shows the cell volts at only 1 bar shortly before turtle would come on with the low cells highlighted in red. Pretty much as l...

well they are working well , still locked in at 49Ah so we are getting standard range. Is the limit because of charging not enough or is the car limiting the outgoing Ahs? the Turtle is...
