Re: Hovercraft Conversion

How much petrol does it use?

How long do you want to go for?

e.g. if the lift motor is going full power the whole time, that’s 11kW, so a full leaf pack won’t last much more than an hour.

Re: School/Preschool

After a session at questacon we bought a bunch of cheap motors and batteries and wires from Jaycar and our kids make things with them together with scrap paper + card, blue tack etc. Some good car ideas here: https://www.makerspaces.com/25-makerspace-projects-for-kids/ You could add an accelerator t...

2012 Leaf can do 600 unbraked; 1000kg braked. Not so big on the ground clearance, I'm afraid.

Re: Are hybrid bikes worth the money?

This is an electric vehicle forum so I’m going to assume you mean an electric bike but the advice is much the same. I see the bike landscape much like a triangle. In one corner, Road/Racer bikes are no-compromise speed/endurance machines for the road. Downhill mountain bikes are in another corner fo...

Re: AEVA Non-Secure so Password Issue

It’s not trivial but it’s not heaps of work for someone who’s done it before, certificates are now free thanks to the “Lets Encrypt” initiative, possibly the hosting company offers a one-off cost to set it up and turn it on?

Re: HP in EV vs HP in ICE

Possibly relevant - some (all?) the Dynos work on (angular) accelleration of a (spinning) mass, so it’s measuring power fairly accurately but if you’ve programmed in an accelleration curve or something in your EV it may think it’s wheel spinning or something. I imagine rocking up with a truck mounte...

Better late than never - this is my understanding... Cooling: ~6kW of heat comes out of the intake air ~2kW comes from electricity ~8kW of heat goes into the outside air ---- 0kW sum Heating: ~7kW of heat goes into the air coming out of the blower ~2kW of that comes from electricity ~5kW of that com...

Re: Direct Drive Help

Back in the days of the Ford LTD and Landau (stretched body Fairlane and 2 door Fairmont) they suffered tail shaft vibration because of the long shaft and possibly because they weren't put together quite straight. The go was to put a hose clamp around the tail shaft, turn it to put the screw part i...

Brisbane. I have edited the opening post with some more details. How far are you with your Cortina conversion?
Not very. Still running original + registered.

Welcome! Awesome car.
WA seems to be different - they want you to register your intent beforehand.
Other states encourage you to talk to an engineer early on but don't care want to know until your engineer has signed off on it.

Hi Stephan, it's been a while! Hi guys, Now I am interested to learn if my initial calculations of the expected speed are going to be correct. An update: 1. Re: Classic EV Conversion - Daimler 250 (V8)

Easier with a classic; If there was a Daimler 250 model without fancy things like brake booster, power steering, heater/demister then you can hopefully do without them to reduce complexity. Take a look at the converted cars at the Brissy meeting; similar (front engine + RWD) layouts would include We...

Not necessarily, the ADC / traction control may have a simple connection (e.g. cut the throttle) which would work for an EV too.

Re: Toyota Yaris conversion

One issue with some (many?) late model cars is traction control/ADC and how integrated it is with the engine management computer: 1. you need to keep the traction control/ADC working 2. sometimes the computer which manages the ADC also manages the engine or talks to it in a non-trivial way 3. when y...

Welcome! I like your donor selection viewpoint. If you have a donor without fancy things like front wheel drive, heater/demisters and power brakes then you can have a very simple conversion.
Work out what project success is: for me part of success is converted car I enjoy driving.

Re: advice?

It's easiest to keep the gearbox and drivetrain; especially if the engine is transverse - you end up doing a lot less engineering. I assume it's a manual RAV 4; not many convert automatics. Toyota US Adid an all-electric RAV4 around 95/96 - not sure what parts they used it would be interesting to lo...
