Holden Volt - Charging Cable Limited To Six Amps.
In relation to in cord units: The ones we looked at were to be used for occasional charging and plugged into a standard 10 amp socket. They claimed to test the earth connection at the car end of the lead but in fact worked whether there was an earth connected to the car or not. Temperature sensing w...

Holden Volt - Charging Cable Limited To Six Amps.
EV Works has done some work and research on the overheating charging lead issue. We have also involved "Clipsal" a major manufacturer of electrical equipment. There are a lot of interesting comments made in the thread above. We do understand the reasoning behind the cautionary attitude taken by the ...

Raising the subject of range extending trailers
Some of you might not be aware of Glen George's trip around Australia towing a range extending pack of batteries in a small trailer. He was at Eucla yesterday so will be back in Perth this week some time. He was able to do almost 300k's on a charge. Most of the time he was happy to do around 200k's ...

Electric Air-conditioning capacity?
There is often some confusion when it comes to calculating efficiency of air conditioning units. The problem is caused by the difference between inside and outside teperatures or more correctly the difference between the condeser and evaporator temperatures. On a very hot day for instance the unit w...

EV charging at Elders Street Carpark
I checked it out a month ago. There were no charging stations to be seen. When I enquired I was told that they are coming but it is not known when.
I think they should remove the signs which clearly state that electric vehicle charging stations are available.
False advertising at the very least!

Home grown BMS ideas !
The best way to prevent corrosion is to stop moisture getting between the joints so there is no cation path. Tight, neatly fitting joints with a moisture repelling, preferably conducting paste will do the job. There are also some spray on sealers that can be used after the connection has been made w...

Correct limit for amps
The "coke" bottle worked well enough to keep the Zilla from reaching cut back temps in most cases. On very hot days it was not quite good enough especially if I was driving hard. On the matter of circulation, it is absolutely essential. On a couple of occasions the cheap little circulation pump I wa...

NCOP14 on emergency disconnect
Hi Toby NCOP 14 is being published soon. The requirement for a mechanical disconnect has been removed to allow 12 volt operated contactors to be used either instead of or as well as. It is worth having a means of checking that disconnection has actually occurred as contactors have been known to stic...

The final version is still in the draft form and has yet to be approved by the Motor Vehicle Industry Board (nationally). They hope to be able to discuss it by April. Section 2.10 as quoted by Tuarn will most likely be unchanged in my opinion. The requirement for a mechanically operated (big red) but...

how much per kilometer
Don't forget if you are depreciating your batteries over 8 or so years then you should include depreciation of your ICE. New, old and reconditioned have different values on resale etc. A set of lithiums that have driven 200,000 km or so might not be worth much but then what is the value of your ICE ...

Spillable batteries
Hi Coulomb Spillable liquid refers to flooded lead acid batteries. The criteria used was based on the battery leaking fluid if tipped on its side or worse. Lithiums and sealed lead acid don't leak under normal circumstances or a rollover. Venting of gasses is again under normal circumstances. Floode...

Timing of NCOP14 revision?
Hi Peter C NCOP 14 revision will be finalised by end of April, hopefully. The document is basically a set of guidelines for engineers and licensing departments to use and/or follow. Most of the inclusions can be added as afters I think so I wouldn't worry too much. Some of the items being discussed ...

[quote="woody"] Rob: if the batteries last as long or longer than the car, then yes they are part of the conversion cost. But hopefully you use your EV more than that so they need to be replaced, so are a running cost. Depends on the usage. It seems biased to me to include battery costs as running ...

[quote="woody"] I see batteries as a running cost, not a conversion cost.
I think we can justify the cost of batteries as conversion cost not running cost. Otherwise we need to view the depreciation costs of an ICE as running costs which we rarely do.

NCOP14 regulations, safety and revision
Absolutely correct HeadsUp. I think it might be useful to start another thread so readers dont link all these good ideas to NCOP14 version 2 which will hopefully be finalised by end of April.
Call it "NCOP 14 version 3" perhaps. That is where the the "floating versus grounded pack" has finished up.
