sand drag bike
Thanks Woody thats great information. Starting with 30kW peak is probably a reasonable starting point. Some brainstorms: 1/ An idea re two motors and one controller. Assuming the motor current drops off with speed, perhaps I could switch in (with contactors) a 2nd motor in parallel with the orginal ...

sand drag bike
Thanks Woody. The course is 120m long and runs with ICE Quads appear to be about 8 secs. I think that means an average acceleration of 3.75 m/s/s, and a terminal speed of 30 m/s (108 km/hr). Hmm, quite fast on a quad that low to the ground. On a bumpy surface too. Not sure how to relate motor power ...

sand drag bike
Hi, I'm building a electric sand drag quad bike with some friends. The ideas is to win against a IC bike over a 200m sand course. I figure it's all about torque off the line and traction rather than top end speed. Ideal for an EV. At this stage we are planning on starting with 72V kit, with somethin...

David's Charade Lithium upgrade
Hi, I have just moved from a lead acid to a Lithium pack of 36 100AH Sky Energy Cells. I have blogged on the Lithium conversion including lots of thoughts on battery rack construction. To stick to my budget (and please my wife) I adapted my lead acid chargers to work with the Lithium pack, and desig...

Peter Campbell's Charade
Hi Peter, Thanks for answering those questions and the pictures. You know I hadn't thought of putting all of the batteries in the back but I guess that would make life simpler for me, too. Only problem is with my 6.7 inch motor the front of the car would be 50 kg lighter than original ICE. Here is m...

Peter Campbell's Charade
Hi Peter, I am in the process of converting my Charade from Lead Acid to Lithium. I was wondering: 1/ What is the split of batteries between the front and rear? 2/ Could you please post some close up photos of your battery racks? I am not sure whats required for Lithiums, I am used to "heavy me...

EV conversion
How would one go about searching for a 2nd hand car with a serious engine problem or otherwise ? Workshops ? Wreckers ? Talk to a couple of local mechanics, they sees a lot of cars and knows when the motors are gone but are otherwise in good condition. You want a straight, rust free body with good ...

Hi Dieter, Good to see you have found some EVers nearby. It's a great idea to meet and even help out on each other conversions. Yes the Chinese Kit from Goombi (Eugen) with 8 x 110Ah Powersonics would be fine for your sort of 16km round trip commute. A Barina is a fine choice, as is a Charade. Alter...

Hello Lachlan, Well done on persevering with your conversion. I am not sure if it helps, but I have also encountered very similar problems, i.e. adaptor plate alignment and motor damage due to over heating. Plus a bunch of others. I have blogged on some of these problems recently. These problems rea...

EV Bugs
Hi, We have been driving our EV every day for nearly one year now, with around 9000 electric km on the clock. Mostly by my wife, who loves the car. I recently wrote a blog post discussing (celebrating?) some of the bugs I have worked through along the way, thought it might be of interest: http://www...

Battery Capacity Bench tester
I built a battery tester using a Wifi router and a $2 PIC microcontroller, have blogged about it here: http://www.rowetel.com/blog/?p=119 It samples voltage and current every few seconds and stores them in a text file on the router. A later version uploads the data to the Web. The uC has a watchdog ...

Taking MPs for a Spin in the EV
Thanks Htial - you keep plugging away with the local governments. Eventually our efforts will meet in the middle. Every time some one sees you in an EV, or when you talk about an EV it plants a seed of an idea. Doesn't matter what their response is.

Taking MPs for a Spin in the EV
Update: I just received a letter from Sen. Kim Carr, the Minister who handles EVs under his portfolio of Industry. Like Peter Garrett, he really liked the ideas of EVs powered from grid connect PV. He mentioned the various EV related initiatives such as "A New Car Plan for a Greener Future"...

Optima Yellow Top D31A
Hi, I have 12 Optima D31A Yellow Tops for sale. They have seen 6 months daily use in my EV, and still meet the cold cranking (1100A) and reserve capacity (155 minute) specifications. The C/20 rating is 75AH but in practice in my EV the capacities are in the 40AH range (my EV uses about 45A @ 60 km/h...

Congratulations Peter - good too see another Electric Charade on the road! Your experience with the engneer and rego sounded familiar to me, I also hit a few similar issues with the whole rego process. I found the whole thing highly subjective, every engineer and inspector will have a different op...

Michael (the owner of the "3-day-EV") has posted some great video of his conversion, starting with the drive from Geelong to Adelaide, and continuing right up to the first test drive 3 days later. The video is about 30 minutes in total (three parts) and gives a great view of the community ...

An update: I just had a letter from Mark Butler and Peter Garrett thanking me for my submission. Peter was particularly pleased with the tie in with PV Solar - I guess the PV rebate program is his baby so it's good for him to see it used in such a novel way. He has passed the submission onto Senator...
