Building an EV that can handle the dirt
Yeah, all modern EVs are AC. Even in the 90's they were AC. The only people using DC are DIY'ers because of the easy availability of forklift motors (hint, you can also get AC forklifts). I posed the question on here a while back about Subarus as EV candidates. Apparently the configuration of the tr...

It's probably silicone potting gel. The same stuff that covers the dies inside of an IGBT brick (if you've ever taken the top off one, you've seen it).
I'm becoming very familiar with the stuff lately.

Yup, that's the story. There's some more detailed information about the condition of the cells (optimistic findings in my opinion) in this post.

You're welcome to arrange your own courier if you want it shipped. That goes for anyone else too. As long as they come pick it up. I could even through them in one of the crates the the CALB cells for the 300zx came in.

RFE batteries, BMS, charger from Enginer kit.
When I helped Jason upgrade the batteries in his PHEV Prius, he gave me the set from the car. The BMS is a bit shotty, but the batteries themselves actually seem to be okay. We replaced the lot of them because the BMS was showing cell 16 to be erratic in voltage, but checking with a meter showed it ...

Industrial style motor couplers
I bought these couplers intending to build a dyno for testing my controller. They are rated to something crazy like 900Nm. I've got the taperlock bushes for them to suit 38mm motor shafts (132 frame standard), and the rubber piece that goes between the jaws of the couplers. This could be good betwee...

Electric throttle pedals (BMW, GM)
I've got two electric throttle pedals for BMW. They'll fit in an E30, E36, and other BMW models as described by a4x4kiwi on his blog here: http://malfunction.faed.name/2013/04/bmw-fly-by-wire-accelerator-for-e30-win.html They're both from a manual vehicle (no kickdown detent) I also have a pedal fro...

J1772 32A plugs and sockets
I bought these intending to use them in my various EV projects, but one of them isn't happening and the other is being rushed to completion so will just use an IEC socket. I have two plug/socket pairs. The sockets (car side) have never been used. The plugs (charger side) are connected to some custom...

For sale: Electric pushbike (ebike)
Just looking for the value of the hub motor and battery kit. The bike needs work (tyres, rear sprocket freewheel, front forks are all worn). For best results, I'd swap the electric kit to a bike in better condition. The battery is a year old, 10ah lithium. The front hub motor works great and really ...

Electric Power Scythe
As with any cordless power tool, its usefulness is determined by its portability and run time. You -could- convert something like that to electric, but remember you'll be pushing the batteries around with it everywhere you go, you'll end up with less run time than the petrol engine, and you'll have ...

How close to the spline are you going to be welding? Unless you're going to be heating the ENTIRE spline hub to red hot during the welding process (that's abig chunk of metal) I wouldn't worry about it. Last time I used a clutch disk spline alone in a coupling I machined the outside of it to be an i...

Looking for a second hand Tritium, fairly urgently. Anyone got one, or have a line on one in Australia?
I believe I need the Type 6 motor interface. The motor has an SFK encoder bearing with single-ended outputs.

If you have one cell reporting 0, that will skew the averages down significantly. I'm not sure how the code works as I haven't delved in to it. Do you maybe have a constant set in the master code expecting more that two cells? For example, if both cells are reading 3.33v, but the master is taking an...

Tesla Motors goes "open source"
Tesla Press Release Tesla has decided not to sue those who use technology from their patents in good faith. This is an interesting development, but there is no mention of source actually being made open, so I'm not sure the use of the term is justified. Patents are intentionally very vague, and alm...

The SOC/voltage relationship between NIMH and LFP are very different. If it uses voltage, then you'll see the SOC not actually changing much at all, even if it is being used. Do you have an ammeter? You might get lucky if the pack voltage sits in a "sweet spot" where the controller will bo...

That day will come, but it won't be brought by the arrival of electric delivery vehicles, it'll be brought by the demise of printed newspapers.
