Drag Racing at Eastern Creek
Hi all, I'm taking my little red electric clubman drag racing this Wednesday at Eastern Creek. There will be plenty of AEVA guys there and hopefully a couple of EVs racing for a bit of competition. The Details Date: Wed, 02-May-2012 Time: from 5:00 pm onwards Cost: $20 for spectators, $50 for racers...

Nope. No good for an EV.
Max discharge current is 150A.
(You'd want at least 500A from a pack this size)
Also, no mention of BMS which is essential for a lithium battery pack.

Hey Mr Electrocycle,
I think you might be comparing apples to oranges.
Your Silvia has much more glass at a very different angle to your ute.

Solar Panels?
I suggest you do some testing before you commit big bucks to solar panels. Step 1 - the baseline. Pick a reasonably long section of road. While recording your power usage, drive along this road at a reasonably constant speed. Repeat multiple times and average the results. Step 2 - the test. Attach y...

All up weight for small car conversion Peugeot 205
Hi Karoshi, A 9" ADC motor weighs about 65kg. I haven't mentioned costs - I see you've started to put a price list together, though I think you are a little low on the battery price. When it comes to batteries, the more you can put in, the better. Don't design your pack to just barely meet your dail...

Hey Karoshi, Of course you can get that sort of performance from an electric conversion. (Google "White Zombie" for an extreme example) Does an off-the-shelf kit exist to do this for a P 205? No. Could you put something together yourself? Yes. Here's the makings of a shopping list to get you started...

tabless A123 ?
Can I suggest that these staples are great quick and dirty way to connect tabbed cells for testing on the workbench, but definitely NOT what you want in a pack for an electric vehicle. These jobbies were designed to hold a wad of paper together in an office environment, not conduct up to 600A of cur...

Seriously? Nitrogen in your tyres is an expensive scam. Compressed air is 80% Nitrogen, and is free at your local servo. It will make bugger all difference to the following: Rate at which tyres deflate over time. Rate at which tyres oxidise over time. Amount of extra Oxygen available to burn stuff i...

Estimating Range
Hi Paul,
The 50% of C20 capacity for an estimate of real world EV capacity is simply a rule of thumb.
As you clock up more kms on your car, on your regular routes with your driving style, you will get a more accurate idea of the capacity of your batteries.

Regenerative Braking
Short answer - yes.
Longer answer, assuming you can set the parameters for max voltage and max current that the controller will feed back into the battery pack, any battery rechargeable battery will benefit from regen braking.
Regen is, after all, just recharging the battery.

Zebra battery and U Caps
Are you sure you want to go down that path (zebra)? From the specs sheet, the battery weighs 150kg, produces 25kW and has a 17kWh capacity. That will give you rather mediocre performance, even in a 465kg glider (but it will give a rather long range) And that's before you muck about converting its 23...

Raising the subject of range extending trailers
I'm not a big fan of range extending trailers. I mean, if you are going to use a fuel powered generator on a regular basis, then why not just drive a fuel powered car? Think about where you are travelling to. Where are you going to park? (Other than a harware store - not too many places in the city ...

Heaviest car to convert?
A Falcon Ute with 200km range as your introduction to building EVs. An ambitious project to say the least. You'll need a large motor and controller. Using DC, that'll be a 9" or larger motor (ADC, Netgain, Kostov) and a 1000+ Amp controller (Zilla, Soliton1, Netgain). Using AC, dunno, others on the ...

First time cheap conversion considerations.
Some people can convert a car to electric within hours. (They have all the parts pre-fabricated, have done the same process many times before, and have many hands to make light work) Some people can take many years. (And sometimes end up selling the EV parts they bought when they give up) Who knows ...

Lithium prismatic cells definitely have to be compressed on their largest flat sides.
I used 3mm flat aluminium plate and found that it bowed with the pressure, so use something thicker or perhaps ribbed (for the battery's pleasure - sorry
Swollen cells have short lives.

Burnouts in an electric drag car
I don't understand the problem.
Big drag-worthy DC controllers have an rpm input.
My Zilla quite effectively limits my motor's rpm with a wide open throttle.

How long? About the same as a piece of string. It all depends. What is the ambient temp and humidity? What sort of air flow into/around the motor? What is it attached to that could act as a heat sink? How overspecced are the ratings for continuous duty? Do you care that running the motor at X amps f...

500km/day Courier eV Possible or not
Hey lithbattboss, dunno about that. Your Lifetech batts have great power density, they don't have the energy density (by weight or volume) that the prismatic batts from TS or Sky Energy have. And yes, the pouch cells give even better density (since they don't have the plastic prismatic box wrapped a...

Maybe with a battery swap or three.
Betterplace might be able to help in a couple of years.
But yeah, as per Mal's calcs above, to do it with one battery would mean a huge battery, which limits your cargo space - not good for a courier.

Hi AirAg, Ok, let's take the errors one at a time: 1141 main contactor high resistance The Zilla thinks that the contactor is not contacting. Do you have the sensor wires connected to each of the high voltage terminals on your contactor? Do you have 12v signal out of the Zilla connected to the 12v p...
