Importing Electric kick scooters

Hi everyone.

Looking to import a brand of electric kick scooters into Australia but have hit some red tape from the usual Government body. Applied for the necessary import approval prior to paying for some sample scooters and I get a refusal letter from the engineer stating that the specifications are above the 200w guidelines. What the hell!!!!

I then applied for a general exclusion stating that all the electric kick scooters currently being marketed and supplied in Australia are way above this 200w maximum but still got refused an import approval.

So question is does anyone know how Inokim, Segway or the others are getting their scooters past these archaic 200w maximum guidelines?? Are they lying on the application for import approval or what ???

Segway get through as they are classified as off-road use only and now for approved specialised tour groups.
The other issue is even if you get them in once you pay for EMC plus safety certs to be able to sell them you'd need to sell a lot to even break even.

Thanks for the replies.

I tried importing them as an "off-road" version but still got rejected. Apparently the scooters didnt have the ground clearance or off road tyres to be classified as an off road vehicle.

I know Cycleboard in the USA took over 18 months to get their products approved for import. But who has the time, money or energy to follow that path.

I see numerous brands and model electric scooters on the road and on footpaths every day here in Brisbane. So IT can be done but HOW???

i can tell you now it comes down to who you want to pay off or who you are related to

like LIME scooters have to be WAY over 250Watt (PS the limit is 250 watt not 200 like you where told)
they can propel a 100Kg mass to 25Kmph that takes way more than 250watts

almost all of them are Xiaomi M365 Electric Scooter or clones of
there motor is 500w at 36v and can easly take 48v so that is what 750watt's

They may well be more than 250w, but 250w is quite adequate to get to 25kph on a bicycle ( I have a cycle analyst that shows the power draw) and I suspect will do on a scooter too.
The claimed performance is possibly optimistic too. The one I rode in Singapore I think needed a very smooth path and a bit of a downhill and some patience to hit 25.

Ah see there's the problem.
There are so many ways to help the world and the environment - fining people isn't it.
Who said we live in a free country.

Yeah so I'd still go with Matt and import in bits and assemble here.
