In the article, they talked about solid state batteries as the next big thing, but also as if they are completely different to present lithium ion batteries. However, it seems to me that if they come, solid state batteries could be very similar to present batteries, just with a solid electrolyte.

They might be similar to gel or VRLA lead acid batteries, which I guess are already solid state, in that the chemistry and active parts are similar to their wet electrolyte counterparts. There is very little liquid in a modern lithium battery as they are now, so perhaps the impact of solid state lithium based batteries won't be very large.

The most promising technology is lithium metal anodes and/or silicon coated anodes. And even then we're still some ways away from a long lasting cell.
