TO BLADE, OR NOT TO BLADE?

Post by Randall679 » Sat, 18 Aug 2018, 08:14

That is my question ...

I am on the cusp of buying a Blade from NSW ... it's a 2009 and apparently an early model ... the owner thinks it was made for the City of Melbourne as a test. He also says it has had an "upgrade" and new batteries ...

Am I just pursuing a pipe dream? I want to own an electric car in Castlemaine because I have solar and can run on the sun. But am I just making a rod for my own back with a Blade, or am I preserving an icon?

I'd like to see a Blade running around Castlemaine where it was built.

Your thoughts, please?

Short answer: unless you are using it as a base to rebuild to your own specifications, don't! (They are a nightmare to fix as no two are the same).

As far as I know, Ross lives in Sydney now. Last article I read made him, he seems a bit bitter about the whole thing. It's reminiscent of that movie TUCKER: THE MAN AND HIS DREAM ...

Why do I want to rebuild it? Don't I want to keep it as original as possible?

I misread earlier, I thought you were planning on upgrading it, rather than it already being upgraded.

Make sure you get a wiring diagram off the person who did the upgrade work.

Out of curiosity, did they fit a larger battery? Any other details on what the upgrade entailed?

I’ll find out what details I can.

OK, I've decided TO Blade ... I'm flying up to NSW to test drive and maybe buy. I really have a good feeling. I am considering driving it all the way back to Castlemaine and documenting it as a little adventure. Wish me luck!

BTW, it does have some documentation, incl. an engineers report. Ross Blade has also contributed some information. This seems to be BEV #1 or #2, built for the City of Melbourne and later upgraded at their request.

I am a bit of a novice in this whole thing, but this car is a collectors item in the new age of EVs.

Thanks! I may have some dumb newbie questions in future ... I hope you'll be patient.

Well, I am now the proud owner of Blade Electron #1 ... or so rumor has it ... built for the City of Melbourne in 2008 as a sample and started the Blade "Revolution" ... 19,500km on the clock ... new batteries ... absolutely mint condition ... It was thrilling to drive for the first time ... I haven't felt like that since I owned a Mini Cooper S way back when ... So looking forward to learning to drive this eccentric vehicle and getting to know all his little quirks.

I decided NOT to drive from Newcastle to Castlemaine ... I ran out of time and, frankly, chickened out ... But my wife and I may do Brisvegas in November!
