second hand imiev battery

Post by mark_hetho »

On another thread it was mentioned there are second hand imiev batteries available. I'm wondering if anyone has one, ideally in NSW, that might be for sale?

There is in Perth, due to Joseph buying a whole new battery for his imiev. But it's individual cells that are available, not a whole battery. There is a crash damaged imiev for sale here in WA with a complete battery. There may be space to do a deal.

I do know there's been at least 2 imievs that have been crashed and written off on the east coast.

Other options include importing a second hand battery from Japan

How bad is your present battery? Have you used an app to check?

I've used canion, but never caught an Ah reading. I think they only get sent during charging?

I usually get home with under 2 bars on the gauge, and forgo heating in winter. I've never gotten stranded though, so it might actually be that the gauge is not well calibrated. I don't think the battery is that bad, we just have a commute that is near the limit of it's range due to hills.

I actually want the spare battery to try putting new cells in it. With a spare pack I can take my time repacking the cells, and then try swapping the packs over a weekend.

I'd be keen to track one of these down.

I tried evbatmon once quite a while ago, I think it was still under development, and it didn't work with either of my OBD adapters.

It's not really material to me what the BMS thinks the Ah reading is though - only that I have enough range to get home, and if I can run the heater while doing so or not, or have the extra range to do a few extra chores in town. So indirectly, if I knew the BMS was reading less capacity than I have, that might be useful. But knowing the Ah capacity the BMS assigns doesn't directly tell me if I've got a few more km range than the car thinks or not.

It is useful for comparison when wanting to swap to a different second hand battery.

The soh (state of health) % tells a similar story though

Ahh yes that makes sense, it would give a basis for comparison of how much the range is reduced by battery degradation, and how much is driving conditions. Or if buying a battery for its cells, rather then just the frame, packaging and BMS, it would only be worthwhile to get a higher capacity pack. I'll have to give EVbatmon another go.

If I'm to repack with new cells I guess I'm really after a 0Ah (dead) imiev battery, so I can take measurements and tinker, or a really low range imiev so it comes with spare parts.

I have an imiev battery shell I could send you. None of the bms is in there though

A battery shell would be exactly what I'm after! I'm assuming it's located in WA? I'm guessing freight costs might add up a bit, but it would be worthwhile if it enables me to succeed in repacking a battery.

When you say none of the BMS is in there, does that mean the cell monitoring units have been removed? Or just the BMS is not part of the pack? Thinking back to when I last had one open, the BMS is actually in the car, but the blocks of cells had monitoring units and I think CAN bus wiring to it.

yeah, the monitoring units on top of the blocks of cells.

I'll look into shipping costs.
It would be better to source one closer to you
how urgently do you want it?

If the monitoring units are not in the pack, I think that kills my plan of preparing the pack ready to swap so I don't have to take the car off the road for an extended period. Yes, it would definitely be better to get something closer.

Not at all urgent - but I think I might really struggle next winter with range anxiety :P

Before you spend time looking into shipping I might cast a slightly wider net for other options.

Just out of curiosity, how did you end up with a shell? I'm guessing it was left over after someone had the pack replaced in their car, and the cells were harvested for other purposes?

EVbatmon reports 36.8Ah, which I think is pretty good.
