Dash Cam on Highlander

Post by ingk »

Got the Highlander today. Cannot figure out how to mount a dash cam. The usual spot behind the mirror is not available due to the large cover for the forward facing camera and sensor for collision protection. Plus the very solid electronic mirror.
This area has to be kept clear for hyundai service . Plus warnings not to make changes in the area.
Seems that top right hand or lefthand corners of screen are the only neat option.
Has anyone fitted a dashcam yet

Can I ask what power supply the dash cam tapped into? OBD? Will there be much battery drain when the recording switches on and off when parked, if it records pedestrian activity at the front? I thought this’d be handy when leaving car with charger cable inserted.

Dash cams generally draw next to nothing so unless you leave the car for a week (or more) it won't drain the 12v battery. The bigger problem is normally memory card space, if you have a camera recording 24/7 it'll chew through the SD card and may record over something that happens when the car was first parked.

The power on leds are off when car is off. The units use super capacitor storage. I guess very very low power draw. I assume there is a socket in the head unit on the windscreen. The Blackvue doesn’t record when car is off like Tesla Sentry. Day 10 of ownership an incident occurred that the cameras picked up, sound, numberplates and our cabin commentary (I must restrain my language). On the freeway south bound, near Joondalup, A 4WD was trying to overtake on the railway side emergency lane, even putting their wheels into the dirt, while the car in front was in the legal lane doing the limit overtaking the slower left lane.

On reviewing the footage I suspect it is an emergency run, there may be a woman unwell on front passenger seat.

Hello everyone,

This thread has been silent for a few months. I am a newbie and have a 2020 Kona Electric Highlander and want to get a dashcam (in Perth). So far, my enquiries have hit a wall. All installers beat a hasty retreat when they hear the word EV.

Any thoughts or installer info? Thanks

Well, if you are in the Rockingham area we install them at Autospark.
There's heaps of different options out there (GPS, front and rear cameras, phone connection, picture quality etc) so most people get their own and we fit them up but we can supply as well.

Thanks Brendon!

Is this the place on Dixon road (or just off Dixon road)? I am in Canning Vale. But work at Rockingham hospital. This would be super convenient for me.

How can I contact you for an appointment? I am planning on the Blackvue 750S/X 2Ch. Hope that's do-able.

Cheers,
Kartik

We used to be on Dixon Road, but we moved. We're now at 4 Edison circuit, East Rockingham.
