How to value my iMiev for sale?

Post by bmscott »

Hey all - it's time to sell my dear 2010 iMiev... it was great while I was commuting over an hour a day, but now I'm a house-husband, keeping it in the driveway for occasional trips to the store doesn't make sense.

I don't expect to get close to what I paid for it, as I bought it while it was still under warranty (and under 10,000km). But it's still in fine shape, under 40,000kms, everything works, and I can still see 100+km on the guess-o-meter at full charge FWIW.

So I'm wondering, how do I price this car? I assume I can get the battery tested if I take it to the local Mitsubishi electric car center in Chadstone - will they give me a report that'd be comprehensible to an electric car newbie?

BTW for those who remember my plan to get a Tesla badge made for my car - I finally 3D printed one yesterday. Painting still in progress, but here's a pic: Image

Redbook says $10,200 to $11,800, sounds about right to me, I figure on cars halving in value every 5 years, which would make ours $10k (bought for 15k 3 years ago, same description as yours).
On the other hand, if anyone really wants an electric car under $20k, there is not much available so you might get $15,000 for it.
There are usually one or two listed on carsales.com.au at $15k-$20 at any given time. Currently only one there, asking $19k.

Yeah, I don't think the book value means much with a rare item like this. It'll sell to an EV enthusiast on a budget or not at all - I know I paid a premium for mine ($19k) and would have paid more...

But I think I'd get more if I can get some kind of battery condition report done on it. If I were the buyer, I'd be more concerned about the condition of the battery on a 2010 model today than I was back in 2015.

They're still selling Nissan leaf for $30k. I don't think there'll be any depreciation until the new models all become available.

Yeah, I only paid 15 for mine, but that was in the brief period when the initial lease on the 2010s ran out and there were quite a few on the market at once. I wouldn't be at all surprised if I could get more for it now. It would certainly be hard to replace for $15,000 if written off.

I suspect the EVbatmon app output is the closest thing around to a battery condition report, but I can't get it to work on mine. Canion allows you to show the cell voltages.

The RR reading is probably a good thing for sales. Would certainly be harder to sell if that is showing 60.

I can certainly get some info from Canbus apps (I sold my dongle but on condition that I get to borrow it back temporarily if and when I sell the car, hi Nuggetgalore!)

As for my range estimator, as I've posted about in the past I live at the top of a "mountain", ~200 meters above most destinations, so my guess-o-meter usually has 5+ kms of hills as its most recent track record to guess by. There's one particular route I can drive that gets me back home after a relatively level trip, and that plus a warm day and a full charge still shows - well, I took a pic this morning! https://imgur.com/gallery/nMK0m

So I just have to make sure I take a nice drive and full recharge before anyone comes to look at the car, I guess... but first I'll also have to get the dents fixed 'n such, so this sale isn't happening before probably January anyhow.

I use Jaycar obdii dongle for EvBatMon.
And Andy Honecker’s dongle for canion.

Recently (2 weeks ago) I need to ensure that i don’t use the mobile data hot spot feature on my J1 2016 Samsung phone for a stable connection with Andy’s dongle and canion

I sold my 2010 for $12,500 a year ago with similar mileage. The battery replacement cost is about that too. Redbook is about right...

Thanks for that - but I thought the battery had gotten significantly cheaper since the car was first released? Like, down to the $8000 range?

Let time I had my 2012 IMiEV serviced, they were able to include the remaining battery capacity on the report (12.9kWh, from an original spec of 16kWh). Performance and range seem to be the same for the last 4 years since we bought it as an ex-demo.
Daihatsu charade conversion 2009-18, Mitsubishi iMiEV 2013-2019, Holden Volt 2018-2019, Hyundai Kona 2019-2023, Hyundai Ioniq 5 2023-present on the ACT's 100% renewable electricity.
