Hi everyone,

At Mallala, the electric bikes set some blistering lap times - a testament to the technology and the dedication of the builders and the riders.

This class is the only true prototype motorcycle racing class in Australia, and it's electric. The promoter of the series doesn't do much to promote the electric class, so it's entirely up to us to make it what it is (more on that in another post).

But Ripperton's machine suffered a major battery failure after it's rider, Brad Swallow set a brief record lap in race three. Three groups of cells were damaged and the repair job will be costly. If Ripperton can't get his bike on track for Queensland, we'll have another two or three bike show and the class will undoubtedly get cut.

So please help me help the competition, and get Ripperton on track in a month's time!

Cheers,
Chris

Does he know what the underlying cause of the cell failures were?

They were a mixed bag of used and very used cells. Plus he's hitting them far harder than they probably should be. Low voltage, high powered packs mean the currents are really high. So the quality of your conductors is critical. We've had some disagreements on how a pack should be built, but I'd say the main issue was just the age of the cells.

Hi
a new set of 520 4Ah cells from YGS will cost $9000AUD ($6300USD) shipped.
Thats 8.4kWh 42s12p. the current pack was 7kWh and is still charging up to 4.2v each cell so I am building a new 12p pack with the used cells.
The main reason the pack keeps blowing up is I have turned the power settings in the controllers up to 100% both motor and battery current. Plus Brad rides harder than I do and he certainly knows how to use the regen. Listen to the onbike video, you will hear the motors moaning under brakes.

Chris has found earlier that a lot of heat is released through the tabs but in my initial Flir camera tests most of the heat was in the skin, thats why I never built packs with tab cooling only skin cooling.
Whilst working on the pack at Mallala I noticed that the busbars wernt cooling down. Over a period of 2 hours there was continued heat being pumped into the busbars so its now clear to me that because the tab is connected to all inner foils, they are capable of removing heat from the core of the cell. If you check out the build thread on DIY you will see the new design of busbar.

Many thanks to Chris for having the magnanimity to start the GoFundMe campaign, it might not bring in a new set of cells but will certainly help with the financial hole Im in as not having a job right now will help get the new pack finished in time for the next race in QLD.
