Install a light in the J1772 inlet

Post by Greg partridge »

I normally park and charge my I MiEV in the driveway which is poorly lit. Plugging in the cable can be difficult in the dark. I Want to install a small LED light in the recess area of the J1772 which is turned on by the drivers door being opened, and off when it is closed. Has anyone attempted installing a light in this area?
Any advise would be appreciated.

I have unscrewed the switch on the drivers door jamb and it is difficult to get access to the connecting wires as there is very little play.

Don't go for the wires to the door switches. go for the wires going up to the interior light itself.

Should find them going up one of the front A pillars...

if you can get to the back if the charge port area you can run a power wire to a magnetic reed switch and a LED and then glue a magnet to the flap so when its closed it turns off the switch

I have just removed the internal panel behind the car jack storage area. I Can drill a hole or two through here into the charging inlet. I Want the light to switch off after 1-5 minutes and not remain on all night If possible.

a single LED can run for like a week off a AA if its done right you want it to be low intensity and low wattage so you would be better off having it just dimly glow all the time the charge hatch is open

that is the simplest way

if you want it to only run for a short time you would need the other type of reed switch (NC not NO) and have a small circuit with a cap on it that runs a LED for a set time
when the hatch is opened it cuts the power off and turns the circuit on

Another option is to stick a small LED light on the J1772 plug. I see Brian M in Perth did this with his Leaf..

What gauge wire should I run from the 12 volt source to the light?

What about sticking one of those round disc shaped battery powered led lights you get at Kmart etc to the back of the flap? eg http://r.ebay.com/yH2cjU You just push the light to come on, push again to go off. The battery would last forever. Much simpler than running wires.

I saw a neat and simple idea on the mynissanleaf forums where someone used a battery powered motion sensor light on the inside of the charge door.

Wouldn't it be simplest to just have a wee torch on your keychain? I've had one for years and they come in handy a fair amount of the time...

The problem is with a 2010 i-MiEV the keys generally stay in your pocket.

This is true. Mine are typically in my backpack so I have to rummage around for them when I did have a AAA sized torch on my key ring. Unfortunately it broke like many things.

...until you reach the front door, anyway! (Mitsubishi should market a compatible front door lock)

I haven't locked my front door in 7 years, but we will keep that between us.

We usually go in through an remote operated garage door, I had to install a remote on the i-MiEV dashboard because the keychain one is a nuisance when sitting in the car with keys in your pocket.
