Chademo charger for the Outlander?
We have just bought an Outlander PHEV and I still have a lot to learn about how to drive it most efficiently. but I have just noticed that the fast charge port on the car is blanked out. I take it this is the Chademo that is mentioned elsewhere? the salesman told us that the car has a fast charging option but I am now presuming that he just didn't understand that this was missing.
I guess my question is - can this still be fitted or is there a reason the Australian Outlander PHEV doesn't come with one?
I am presuming that the RAC charging stations have the fast charging capacity. The one I use near work can take just as long as charging at home and that can tie up a charging bay for an unnecessarily long time (I don't leave the car there for more than a couple of hours, but that can still be too long). It would be good to have the fast charging option for longer trips. I live in Busselton Western Australia.

your dealer lied it's not even an option in australia
"Fast charging capability is most suitable for (pure) Battery Electric Vehicles which rely solely on battery power from the grid for their driving functionality and do not have hybridisation to enable range extension. Fast Charger functionality adds significant cost to the vehicle and it wouldn’t make economic sense to impose this cost to the customers of a hybrid model. In Australia there are very limited CHAdeMO compliance fast chargers and only a handful of these are also available to the general public." -Mitsubishi google plus team

The Australian delivered Outlander PHEV doesn't come standard, nor has an option for CHAdeMo.
With the upgrade model that is coming out in June/July, it may be a cost option.
No chance of retrofitting it either.
If they did have CHAdeMo on the upgrade model, it would be on my shopping list for sure...

I may just have my words mixed up. under the charging flap is a blanked out port on the right. in the promotional online video, at about 2minutes in it shows the fast charge option at a public charger. Yes its in the UK though (https://youtu.be/Ca3A_OiFRAY). I was just presuming that the RAC public chargers were the same. In any case, my Outlander doesn't have one. I think I'll see the salesman and let him know not to promote this feature. Thank you all for your replies.

Well I have just bought a PHEV myself...
I have had a quick look. there is only 2 things to confirm once I take delivery.
1) If the 2 x CHAdeMo contactors and fuse are fitted inside the battery pack
2) If the support for CHAdeMo is still switched on in the PHEV-ECU.
If both of the above are true, it can be done. It will require the 2 x relays in the fuse box up front and the CHAdeMo harness complete and maybe the different plastic shield if you don't want to mod the existing one. If you remove the panel inside the back RHS quarter panel you will find a blue multi pin connector. That is for CHAdeMo. there is also 2 spaces for contactor relays under the bonnet drivers side fuse box. The wiring is there. Take a look for yourself...

Interesting..
I will take a look myself. My interest in this is to use the CHAdeMO connector for running an inverter eventually.
I will need to also learn to speak CHAdeMO.

These are the 2 extra relays required under the bonnet.
Panasonic Electric Works ACVN51212
A long way to go with the research!
We should be able to check if the contactors exist by measuring the coil resistance between the relay under the bonnet and the connector behind the RH Rear trim reecho mentioned. Could even energise it if feeling brave!
Heaven knows if the car firmware is up to all of this!
It is fun to research anyway.

So boys, as usual, I don't stick to the topic but I really want to know:
All you Outlander PHEV owners out there:
After owning them for a while, what is the verdict?
Does the concept stack up?
I have a late model Prius which of course is not plug-in. We get around 5 to 5.2 kp100K depending on who is driving and how far you drive, trip-wise
Do you see the Outlander as an electric car only, in a sensible way, when driving around the place but not travelling?
Do you think it outweighs the Prius (latest one, but about 3 years old)?
Is it much of a muchness?
I'm telling you what is biting me.

After 1 year and 15,500 km I can say for our family it is fantastic and perfectly suited to our needs (replaced a Honda CRV). I'm just back from a 2200km trip taking 4 mountain bikes and 2 waveski's on the PHEV so a Prius just wouldn't work for us.bladecar wrote: After owning them for a while, what is the verdict? The current bargain prices for the "runout" old PHEV stock represent awesome value. I was chatting to the sales rep who sold me mine the other day and it sounds like we may never see the new 2016 PHEV that Europe has. The PHEV goes on sale in USA in August which may soak up any capacity that Europe is not taking, especially now Germany is paying 1.2 billion subsidies for PHEV & EV. Meanwhile in Australia there were still "new" 2014 models sitting around unsold last time I looked.

Before the latest interstate trip our all time fuel consumption in the PHEV was 3.6l/100km, and the latest trip has pushed that up to 4.2 from memory. Still awesome for a mid sized SUV. We've done 3 interstate trips totalling about 7000km where obviously there was little opportunity to plug in.

Chademo charger for the Outlander?
Had mine since November and put about 5000km on it, filling it up 3 times so far.
In my mind, it is the most viable electric vehicle there is right now, especially at the price they're selling.
It is the ideal vehicle for the daily short "mum's taxi" duties and yet is still very capable of extended travel.
I use it almost exclusively on battery as my work is very local, if I do go further, say more than 20km, I run it in hybrid mode and it returns between 7-8l/100.
If you look around the forums, it is very hard to find an unhappy owner!

I spoke with a Mitsubishi representative last week who confirmed that the next generation Outlander will be imported into Australia with CHAdeMO connector.

I would love to buy a wrecked one, and try to get a CHAdeMO connector fitted and working, maybe a reflash of the ECU, and the additions mentioned above is all thats required?
also, take delivery of my 4 month old PHEv on Tuesday, and reading the manual, the engine recharges at a rate as fast as or faster than a CHAdeMO charger, so the hardware on the battery side of things must be there. maybe even doing something to fool the system into thinking power from the Engine in charge mode is actually coming from the CHAedMO hardware?

I wouldn't get too hung up about superfast charging capability. It's not that sort of car. It is certainly very desirable/essential to have it in an EV, but not the Outlander. Besides, from what I hear it can be a bit rough on the battery.

This is a very interesting thread concerning the PHEV and the CharDeMo socket. I have had my PHEV for two years and love it to death. Such a clever car and everything works seemlessly. As with you guys I'd love to either retrofit a CDM socket or buy the new vehicle if it set up with one. I charge my vehicle from our solar and I'd love to be able to connect the 13kWh battery to my house in the evenings rather than give my solar energy back to Synergy for next to free. Th other thing a ChaDeMo usually facilitates is connection to the vehicles ECU and power control circuitry. V2H is coming so very very slowly but I note the Chinese vehicle BYD (Build Your Dream...ho ho) has all the necessary stuff already built into the vehicle....come on Nissan and Mitsubishi.

Very good thinking. It makes me wonder then, if most of the kit is on board, with the exception of a few cheap bits and a bit of programming, why wouldn't they just fit the CHADemo as standard...spoilsports. Hopefully some clever fellows like you can work out an after market solution?

Been nearly 6 months since owning my PHEV, and its definitely been worth it, over the 6 months, fuel use has been 1.9 L/100km, exactly on the sticker figures. including a trip to Newcastle, and 3 trips to the snow.
on other news, i managed to get hold of a PHEV wreck, 99.9% complete, only missing the front RH wheel.
next purchase will be a M.U.T III programmer, and see what we can d with the wreck.
from my understanding, the AUS and NZ delivered models dint come with the hardware for a Chademo charger in the battery pack, but everything else is there. so, when i get some time over the coming months, ill get the battery pack apart, and see just whats in there, and whats needed for Chademo charging. if its really needed in Oz.
of course, ill post pics.

I spoke with the MMAU product specialist at the AEVA AGM.
MY17 Outlander PHEV's land in the country in Feb and will hit dealers in March.
CHAdeMo and EV only mode button standard.
Oh and they DID get MY16 PHEV's into Australia...
All 11 of them....
Needless to say they are all at Tonsley Park being used as staff cars...

Wow, that's great news, thanks for posting. I thought we were going the way of USA and missing out on new PHEV's.
It will be interesting to see how they implemented the EV only button. I assume there will be a kickdown (aka PHEV box) or better (iMiEV style) lump which still allows access to the ICE for an extra 60kW incase you need it in a hurry.
