Modular Vehicles

Hi,

This is not really a reply to myself but an extension of the subject.
On today's most reliable NEWS site, there is a report from the US and it pertains to where modern cars are headed with their technology.

Please, anyone, feel free to start a new topic as need be.

We know how much the phone makers, telcos, government, own our phones and comms.

We know how much the international companies own our computers.

The ABC news item refers to vehicle connectivity.

What I want to say is that it would be great if there was a vehicle, in the style of LINUX, which was basic, used fairly ordinary components which ONE DAY are upgraded if you hang around long enough, but which get the job done and does it YOUR WAY, within its narrow boundaries

My main theme is that industry is quickly owning us with standard technlogy and I feel particularly uneasy about it. There's no avoiding it but there needs to be a path less travelled.

I think this is a great Topic that Bladecar has raised.

Woudn't it be great if we could use a set of generic, modular components to assemble our own car, just like you can with a computer these days?

Of course, there are many hurdles to be overcome, particularly in the safety arena, but greater challenges have been surmounted in the past.

Now if our government and industry leaders had true vision and intestinal fortitude, maybe a concept like this could be used to create a phoenix from the ashes of our automotive industry and add some substance to the "clever country" political thought bubble that gets tossed around at election time.

I'll say now that if such a car were to be established, I would acquire one and hold on to it, with the idea of adapting it as much as possible
