J1772 splitter to 3 x C14 or 240V 10A socket
Was wondering whether anyone has made or bought a J1772 splitter that would allow you to wire in up to 3 x IEC C13 female plugs (TC/Elcon chargers) or 3 x 240V 10A sockets.
I'm looking to use this setup to ride longer distances on my Zero and be able to charge up using J1772 up to 32A with at least 2 x 2000W Elcons + onboard 1300W charger. This would allow charging from near empty to full in under 2 hours.
Hollywood Electrics offer one at USD400 but was hoping for something less expensive.
Here's a link to their J1772 Adapter . Their adapter unit uses a C19/C20 plug combo but C13/C14 should be sufficient for max 2400W draw.
Thanks,
Dave

I know EVTV/MotorWerks supplies J1772 plugs and adaptors, no reason you couldn't modify them to suit. Just a matter of getting the pilot signal right.

gelco services J1772 to 3112
the problem is how do you know the difference between a 32 amp J1772 16amp 30 amp or 10 amp etc..

Prettymuch every public J1772 charge point should be wired to 32 A.

why the whole point of J1772 is that we can vary the amperage to suit the installation and even have dynamic limitation to avoid peak power times.

Which is great, but in reality it's easier to just supply the charge point with a 32 A connection and be done with. It's about $10 worth of copper.

I think I good point to remember, is that the car only takes as much current that it needs. ie. if your car charger needs 8 Amps - that is what it supplies.
The 32 Amp rating is just the maximum. Remember, it's just a glorified/specialised 240V outlet.

only if you have enough overhead the cost of replacing a service fuse using a level 2 or higher electrician isn't cheap.

Thanks, just getting back to this now.
I have a Dostar J1772 32A socket and cable and AVC2 from Modular EV Power (link) to take care of the pilot signal. Will look to connect it all together inside a small junction box. The Zero has a fused 12A supply I can use for the AVC2. The AVC2 also has a relay so I can readily add an LED on the junction box itself to show when the J1772 is connected/disconnected.

I'm no electrician, but one potential problem I can see with this is the risk that 3 adjacent 10A sockets could well be on a single circuit from the switchboard so if your charger were to try and pull 30A it could trip the circuit breaker, especially if there were other appliances on the same circuit pulling current at the time.

I will only be using the J1772 adaptor at public charging stations and at a home EVSE that I know can supply 32A.

you thought about using and arudinio (or other micro) to read the wave signal so you know the duty cycle and the amperage ?

No, I hadn't considered adding an Arduino. I assume it's possible to build a program to interpret the available amperage from the EVSE and disconnect the 3 IEC13 cables if the rate falls below 30A.
Have you seen this done elsewhere with associated code available?

Closing out this thread ...
I bought a Zero to J1772 adaptor from http://www.tucsonev.com that has 3 x C14 plugs. I know that consumption of each of my chargers so will be able to plug in to J1772 public chargers and keep under their rated capacity - usually 6.6kW.
