Will be interesting to see if the 2010 models can be modified to work with the standard j1772 evses that come with the 2011+ imievs

2010 imievs used for gateway project

Post by acmotor »

Just a little update information on the 2010 iMiEV and the J1772.

Today we checked on the two 2010 iMiEVs sold in Perth last week from Paceway Mitsubishi.

Both had J1772 and CHAdeMO connectors. Both had J1772 'EVSE less' power leads. i.e. just J1772 with 3 pin 15A plug on the end. Reported but not measured at this time to be 12-13A charge.

Plugging my full EVSE charger into one vehicle responded in nothing charging. The instrument panel light showed a charger plug inserted light but no charge. Presumably the EVSE was getting no handshake from the EV.

Plugging the full EVSE charger into the other vehicle resulted in normal charging action (at least appeared normal without actually monitoring the current).
The owner then produced a slip of paper from the glovebox that stated the pilot signal (1kHz, used by J1772 standard) had been enabled on this vehicle.

So, does that mean that the full J1772 function is just a tick box in the ECU setup ?

Further questions to be asked.

Perhaps insist that this is enabled by the dealer if you are looking at buying one of these 2010 models.

it might just been a firmware upgrade on the charger it might be a charger swap out to a newer model.

Brilliant! And one of them (with the "software upgrade, or maybe some hardware) can still charge at a regular 1772 charge point.

The best of both worlds! (IMHO of course.) Plug it in to any 15 A outlet, or J1772 charge point, and no bulky EVSE to worry about!

Just the obvious reduction in user safety with the non EVSE setup. Mostly being the J1772 plug (and cable) is live before insterting in the EV.
Pulling the plug during a charge results in a break under load. Spark ignition source and contact degradation potential.

Isn't that the point of the proximity wire and the button you need to press to release the J1772 connector? My understanding is that the proximity wire goes to the vehicle only, not the EVSE, so the vehicle's charger is supposed to reduce the load to zero or near zero when the button is pressed. The charger can reduce the load quite quickly, likely faster than the J1772 can be mechanically removed.

Testing with Eddie & Simon's 2010 imiev
a) Holden EVSE - 12.015A, 2948.2W - I couldn't believe this at first, cos the EVSE is rated to 10A/2300W
on 2011 imiev - 9.284A, 2318.3W - another weird product from Holden.

b) e-station's Circontrol fbox - 12.052A, 2963.9W
c) e-station's Circontrol cardbox - E5 error message; this seems to be low credit and is not in the manual
http://www.e-station.com.au/homecharge.html

d) evseupgrade - 11.990A, 2950.8W
on 2011 imiev - 12.805A, 3135.5W - looks like Holden is not the only weird one.

*** good news though ***
is that the 2010 imiev with the Club Assist pilot signal upgrade/update allows charging with J1772 standard EVSEs.

we also went to the
a) Murdoch Uni Elektrobay bollard
b) Magic Nissan bollard
both work OK.

One odd thing with the Better Place cable.
Somehow the blue trigger would not come back up far enough for the microswitch to activate
The UWA mennekes to j1772 cable is fine, but is rather tight. Some Chinese products tend to have thicker tolerances. I noticed this with some Ni-MH batteries I bought from Strathfield 10 years ago. Had to strip off the plastic covering at the risk of short circuiting.

didn't test with the dostar mennekes to j1772 cable as it is probably best to go with the cable suggested by the REVProject; this cable is also longer, but is starting to curl.

e-station still has a couple of Thomas Braunl's orange menn-j1772 cables; bga has one. It is the shortest of the lot, but the good thing is that it has covers on both ends.
it is a Dostar brand.

edit - added Better Place cable info.
edit - added e-station's Circontrol brand
edit - added URLs to various products.

So how to get the Club Assist pilot signal upgrade done on Ant's i (assuming he wants it)

Coulomb, yes. But the 2010 in question was not obeying J1772 including proximity as expected (didn't shut charger off). Thus the interest in an upgrade as it seems possible. Don't forget the live cable/connector issue in your ponderings.

g4qber came over today with a selection of EVSE's to try out on my parents 2010 iMiEV that has been modified to work with j1772 EVSE.

We tried a Holden Volt EVSE (10A), modified Nissan Leaf EVSE(10A), 1 of Patrick's (forget the brand) and an iMiEV EVSE. On all of them it was drawing a steady 12A! 2800-2900W.

We also tried out g4qber's jaycar 10A to 15A adapter and it tripped after a few minutes unlike ours which happily runs continuously at 12A without tripping!

Also went to Murdoch Uni and tested on the charge points there and found out the blue better place menekees to j1772 cable will not quite lock on the 2010 imiev. But on another cable it worked just fine.
We also visited Magic Nissan Melville and charged there at 2920W.

Would be good to try out the UM EVSE again and measure the current that it pulls on that at the different modes.

Bit of a problem that it draws 12A always.. won't be able to charge at my sisters old house. My Niki that only charges at 6.8A trips the circuit breakers!

tonight simon & i managed to try out patrick's cardbox, whose card had been recharged to 99 credits @ 0.15 euro/kWh
11.873A 2909.3W

Simon's parents imiev via 2010 cable:
2867.2W 11.972A

2010 cable into 2011 imiev:
fans start up but no charge,
0.354A 2W

had a call from Matt mitsubishi australia
officially mitsu won't upgrade the 2010
I shall ask Glenn Pitcher of Paceway used cars whether the remaining 2010 imievs can be upgraded in a similar way to SImon's parents' 2010 imiev

Bob gell
This company unofficially upgrades 2010 imievs to be evse compatible.
They collaborate with club assist.
Would be great if they would share their info with other ev specialists.

Swapped my adaptor cos the switch was sticking.
Now this model is allowing 13amps through without shutting down
15 mins so far.

So I might have Simon's model.

15 min in.

more proof from the UK that the vanilla 2010 imiev is not compatible with J1772 lunchbox & hence bollards with J1772 cables.
