KLE failure?

Post by chrisl »

Plugged our 2015 i3 BEV into our JuiceBox and there was a loud pop and magic smoke smell. Error message saying drivetrain error and not possible to drive. Will turn on, can release park brake, but cannot go into neutral or drive. Getting towed on flatbed tomorrow to Brisbane BMW.
Has anyone suffered anything similar? I suspect that the KLE failed (mine has DC fast charging.)
Hate to find out how much this is going to cost!!!

For we non-BMW drivers, what is a KLE?

I wish you an inexpensive experience, though I'll admit that this doesn't seem likely, with the price of magic smoke these days.

The KLE is the onboard charger.
Just was informed by BMW Brisbane that the failure is in the EME, which is the motor controller/inverter...
They have applied to BMW for an out of warranty replacement. Will update once I have some news next week!

My late 2014 i3 BEV 221975 forgot how to CCS1 Rapid Charge. I wondered if the internal charging cables inside were OK, given that they had fiddled with them after the granny charger got stuck in place, and I pulled the $800 emergency cable to free it.

Over 12 months, all three magic boxes replaced:
KLE was about $5k (BMW goodwill replacement)
EME was about $13k, (BMW goodwill)
LIM $700 (paid by me to expedite, and save a month)
Then they checked the internal charging cables....

For $3k, I got it converted to CCS2, and it's been wonderful ever since. At least I now have the latest revisions of each box.

I suspect that BMW in Canberra (Rolfe) are now better at this, than they were before learning on my car...

All good.
