Kona portable EVSE works fine with Zoe

Post by Bryce »

After a note in the Nissan forum that the Hyundai supplied Kona portable EVSE didn't work with the Leaf, I thought I'd better try the Kona's EVSE on the new Zoe. Can report it worked perfectly.

On the other hand, my Mode 3 (1 phase 32A) EVSE was a bit cranky with the new Zoe - took a few tries to get it to talk nicely to the car. (And the Zoe is now pulling almost 8kW from my 7.4kW EVSE ... ah, the vagaries of modern electronics ...;-) )

Cheers

High line voltage? At 255v 32A I could see 8kw happening (pf isn't corrected on the zoe)

No PF correction! I guess that makes sense with the inverter as the charger, but still.

More likely uncorrected pf then. Kona never pulls over 7ish kW.

oh, that's the other thing - the zoe can stay at 32A all the way up to max voltage (not sure how high it cuts out, but I've been above 260v)
actual chargers tend to be power limited

no pf correction is more of a compromise rather than absent completely, but is more of an issue at low charge rates (10A is the practical lower limit on both single and 3 phase)

Bryce - how are you measuring power? are you also able to get kVA?

Yep, that's about normal for a Kona. At this very moment mine is pulling 7.3kW according to the dash and 7.0 according to the EVSE. (This particular EVSE has always read low as compared to both my home energy monitor and the Kona). The fact that the EVSE was showing 8kW with the Zoe was what surprised me.
