Zoe off grid charging

Post by birdibird »

Hi all,

I just wanted to share here that my dream came true yesterday.

We are now charging the Zoe off grid!

I found an inverter (MPP Solar PIP-5048MG) which does not need the grid or batteries, so I have a direct PV ->EV system.

I am using the granny atm in 10A mode.
Today I'll try 14A.
Future will be to build a smart/open evse to squeeze the max out of the sun and the panels!

I'll keep you posted.

I have wanted one of those for about 10 years ( but they do not exist I have been told). I ended up with a hybrid system instead.
There was nothing worse than running a generator on a very sunny day, with solar panels on the roof, but a mains blackout.

I would really like to be able to run the 400 volts DC from my solar panels directly to the 350-400 volt DC battery in in my Leaf through the CHADEMO DC charge socket.

Yes, that is the same one!
They do exist, and I am also very impressed it just works!

That would be very cool if that became possible. No idea how Chademo works and if you could build a smart EVSE using the DC from the panels directly...

Zoe R motor has a spare 400 V connector in the back where you can connect solar pannels directly to the battery , no inverters :)
But you have to be careful, the car must be on or the positioning lights must be on, so that the car will not go to "sleep" and diskonnect's the main contactor, if that happend's then you will brick the car (I have done it once).
Then you also have to observe the SOC
14 pannels in series is minimum.
I use that connector to connect Zoe to my 30 kVA UPS when long blackout happend's (UPS also have a 400 V battery)
Renault ZOE R240 upgraded to 41kWh
Nisssan leaf 2018 40 kWh(35 kWh usable after 43kkm)
25 kWh 32 Hp electric tractor
scooter govecs GO1.2 converted to lithium
Solar installation 11 kWp

That's fantastic to know.
I'm assuming whilst the car is on, it is tracking state of charge?
Does the charging show up as regen on the dash?

so what happens when you charge with positioning lights on only?

when you go to charge normally, what happens when the battery reaches full before the car's fuel gauge?
Does the gauge reset to full? or does an error get thrown?

The car fuel gauge is updating normal with positioning lights on, only the regen is not shown.
One time I had a charging inpossible message and I had to take the car to the service but the battery was empty, I could call the flat bed, but I charge the car with my ups through the spare 400 V connector :)

Did Renault tell what the cause of the charging impossible message was?

At first they blame 12 V battery but it was not the cause of the fault
