Renault EVs now available in Oz

Post by Bryce »

Hi all - if you did not get the notice from Renault Australia - the Zoe AND the Kangoo ZE are now officially available for sale .... so long as you have an ABN that is.

Press release wording below:

Renault Australia is plugging into the Z.E. revolution, with the much anticipated ZOE and Kangoo Z.E. due to hit Australian shores later this year.
Groupe Renault has a ground-breaking Z.E. (Zero Emission) range of passenger and light commercial vehicles. It is the pioneer of all-electric mobility and is the market leader with electric vehicles in Europe.
Renault Australia supports the Alliance’s global position on the benefits of electric vehicles and as such, will bring ZOE, a supermini and Kangoo Z.E., a compact van, to Australia to provide zero emission options for environmentally conscious businesses and local authorities desiring the cleanest possible transport.
Both ZOE and Kangoo Z.E. will be sold directly to customers by Renault Australia to business-to-business and business-to-government customers only for the time being.

ZOE
ZOE is Renault’s innovative, chic and frankly revolutionary 100% battery-electric supermini and its arrival on our shores marks the beginning of a new history for practical, affordable, efficient and environmentally-friendly vehicles.
From its introduction in Europe, the ZOE has delighted over 75,000 customers and is Europe’s best-selling electric passenger car. The Z.E. 40 battery, coupled with a range of on-board technology, delivers the best range of any mainstream all-electric vehicle currently available for purchase. ZOE has a driving range of 400km NEDC or a 300km practical driving range.

Kangoo Z.E.
The Renault Kangoo Z.E. is a pioneering electric van that incorporates a wealth of innovation and has been specifically designed to meet the needs of professionals and their business requirements, alongside environmental targets. Since launch in 2011, Kangoo Z.E. has been the most popular electric van on Europe’s E.V. (electric vehicle) commercial market.
The new Kangoo Z.E. achieves a driving range of 270km NEDC or 200km in real-world driving. Charging the Kangoo Z.E. is fast, easy and its battery can fully charge in as little as six hours. A one-hour lunch break allows for a 35km top-up to your range, helping drivers optimise their working day.

Oh - forgot to add some specs and pricing I found in the latest GoAuto newsletter:

Standard equipment on the Zoe Life will include climate control with remote cabin pre-heating or cooling, a 7.0-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation,
DAB+ digital radio reception and MP3 audio source compatibility, cruise control and a multi-function steering wheel with voice recognition.
Dusk-sensing headlights, rainsensing wipers and rear parking sensors can be optioned as part of the City Pack upgrade. The Easy Pack upgrade adds one-touch driver’s window, electric rear windows and keyless entry. Pricing for options is yet to be determined.
The Zoe Intens will come with all the above equipment plus a reversing camera.
Metallic paint is optional on both variants.
Life (a) $44,470

I've been away for the past 3 weeks, but I believe I read somewhere that the Renaults are only available in the Eastern States, can anyone confirm or deny?

Went and visited a Renault dealership in Sydney today to talk about the new EV range and the gentleman wasn't too across this. It is obviously very new and early days so I'm not surprised. Has anyone done a test drive yet? Would be great to hear some feedback.

I know the Vic branch had a field day with it, and Les (Qld) has sat in one, don't know about drives though. With any luck we'll see one in Tassie next month!

Quick answers to both of above posts:
1. Zoe & Kangoo ZE only available direct through Renault Australia, NOT through the dealer network! Details:
http://www.renault.com.au/news/all
and follow the links;
2. In May the Vic group went to Renault headquarters in Mulgrave (Melbourne) to see Kangoo ZE & Zoe. Zoe looks awesome and very comfortable to sit in, but no test drives at the time :(

Cheers

I buy a lot of stuff online, so I've got used to making purchases without feeling the need to touch beforehand.

However, despite this and my passion for EVs, I couldn't bring myself to spend this kind of money without a test drive at least and I believe most car buyers would feel the same. So, either I'll have to wait until a demonstrator makes its way to WA, or gamble an airfare to whichever East Coast city might have one available for test drive. I note that the contact forms at the bottom of the Renault EV web page have buttons labelled "fleet" and "register your interest" (the latter for "electric vehicles for your home") so clearly not yet targeting the private consumer at all.

I still don't understand why they have this restriction. Do fleet buyers need less customer care than individuals maybe?

Ok, just joined so I hope I have the etiquette ok.
I test drove a Zoe ZE40 from Renault HQ in early Dec, and placed an order verbally. Quick as a flash nothing happened.
To cut a long story short, there is a dealer in Mlb (Barry Bourke, Berwick), where I'm getting mine; and one in Sydney CBD (apparently).
My Intens is about $48k, plus rego (I'm buying in Vic, but live in NSW).
I have encouraged BBB to actually sell me one, and I paid a $1k deposit a couple of weeks ago.
I may get it this week, or next, or whenever - no one knows.
Renault HQ have been anything but proactive, but seem to be nice people...
I have also worked with Shannon’s to get it on their books, and the annual premium is about $950.
I have spent about $2k on Type 2 adapters, converters, connectors and extension cords (I have a 7kW Aerovironment EVSE at home, from Gelco, Adelaide). I am now importing a beaut whiz bang single unit charger/converter from Austria for $2k.
I am on PlugShare.
I've also organised a spare Clio wheel from a wrecker, as I live in the bush...
I'll let you know when I get it.
Cheers

Has anyone bought a new Renault ICE in recent years? Are they as reluctant to sell their ICE models?

I suggest Renault are stalling as the Zoe will get a refresh around July. Possible inclusions include 60Kwh battery and CCS2.

82 kW motor
CCS 2 DC fast charging
22 kW AC onboard charger
60 kWh battery (?/!) - They suggest they are moving to NCM 811 - More nickel, less cobalt, and better energy density. I reckon if there is a bigger battery it won't be much more than the 40 kWh already there - which given the size of the chassis, it quite a feat!

The first Renault Zoe will arrive in Perth on April 26th. Test drives available from Melville Renault. The Zoe can be charged on the RAC Electric Highway(TM) using the Type 2 Cable on the Circontrol DC stations.

Home charging stations suitable for the Zoe are available from E-Station.

Did Renault give a reason for the delay? Do we have a confirmed date for availability?

I saw the Zoe at Melville Renault this afternoon, looks very nice. They also have the Kangoo. Said they need to get them registered before test drives are available, probably later this week. I just wish the price was about half.

The base model Zoe in the UK is a bit over UKP18,000 that translates to AUD$33,000, so it could be a lot cheaper than AUD$48K one day, once the market picks up for EVs and our reluctant governments introduce some incentives.

Is Renault charging the monthly battery rental in Oz?

No battery rental option in Australia - apparently because financing the whole car is popular here.

Great that they can be looked at here in Perth, but I'll still wait until I can actually drive one.

Anyone know how much the Kangoo is?

These vehicles are still hard to find on the Renault web site, still only found under "Future vehicles" which would give the average punter the message that they can't be bought yet. Still getting the strong vibe that they're not selling these very hard... Wouldn't it be nice if at least one mainstream vehicle dealer actually tried to sell an EV??

I'd prefer a Kangoo rather than a Zoe, but with the bigger battery that is in the Zoe. Don't suppose the model refresh will put a bit more battery in a Kangoo ? It will be interesting to see how Nissan prices the 40kw Leaf, hopefully Nissan sharpens its pencils a bit more than it did with the original Leaf.

I have just purchased a Zoe Intens in Sydney. I added armrest, blue colour and carpet mats. It cost $55,000 which is rather a lot. From order to delivery was only one week (UK is 6 months!) All stock is being held in Melbourne.

I love driving it as does my wife. It goes up our exceedingly steep (33%) driveway with ease.

Around town, it is doing excellent mileage.

A couple of little negatives:
a. The stock they are selling was manufactured July 2017 (at least mine was).
b. Consequently, no Android Auto for Australia- yet.
c. The user manual says you can set start/end preset charging times but I cannot see any way of setting the end time- only the start.

Apart from that- fantastic. Even though it is one of the slowest EVs to 100km/hr, it is very quick indeed from the lights and around town. Feels much nippier than my Peugeot Turbo GT 508. Haven't taken it on the 110km/hr freeways yet, but lots of people in the UK and France do this and find it good.

Dave

Wonderful to hear! I suspect despite the price there will be a few sold, given the limited options for BEVs under $50k (or slightly higher!)

I drove both of them a few months ago.
Kangoo didn’t feel that fast, but was a good little van. Set up to feel very much like driving a manual, regen felt like engine braking and there was no creep at idle.
Zoe felt more like an auto with creep and very little regen until you touch the brakes.

I loved them both, and I’d rock a ZOE except for the lack of DC charging which means the NRMA electric highway is useless.
If they bring the update model with DC and bigger battery I could very well look at buying one in a year or so, otherwise I’ll be looking for a great deal on a stock clearance when they realise nobody is going to pay $50k with no DC charging option once the Ioniq and Leaf 2.0 are here...
