Who makes Tesla's Charging Stations?

Post by Paul9 » Thu, 21 Apr 2016, 21:33

Hi people,

This is just a curiosity question. Does anyone know the name of the company who makes the Tesla's Charging Stations for Tesla? I don't think Tesla makes them themselves?

I am thinking of buying a Tesla down the track sometime.

Thanks in advance,
Paul

Delta make lots of Tesla's electronic components.
I challenge you to come up with a better invention than the bicycle

There are a few YouTube videos discussing the internal components of the HPWC

Sorry, I didn't know Tesla produced two different types of chargers? Or is one type produced by Tesla and the other produced by someone else?

Apologies for my dumbness!

There's a lot of confusion around the term "charger"
From a technical point of view it should be reserved for the equipment that actually converts the AC power from the grid into DC power for the battery, so when charging on AC the chargers are actually in the car - and the device you plug into (often called a charger) is more properly known as "EV Supply Equipment" (EVSE) which is a fancy term for a glorified power point - with communication to the car to tell it how much current it can draw, and communication from the car to only turn on the power when a car is plugged in - ie safe from children with sharp metal objects poking around inside the plug.

A "charging station" could mean either just an AC EVSE, using the car's onboard chargers - or it could mean a DC fast charger, where the chargers are inside the road-side cabinet and it sends DC current direct to the battery.

The Tesla HPWC (High Power Wall Connector) is just an AC EVSE, but the superchargers have a stack of 12 chargers inside (identical to those inside the car) so they can feed up to 120kW into the battery.
And I had also heard these were made by Delta but I don't have anything to back that up.
