Charging Teslas from an Australian 3 phase outlet

Post by 4Springs »

Hi All,
One of our members spoke to a Tesla tourist who had what he describes as a "bag of tricks". This let him charge his Tesla from a 3-phase industrial outlet at quite a rapid rate.
There has been some interest from other local Tesla drivers in buying these converters, and we think it might be worth buying a bunch of them at once. It sounds like they are sourced from France, and have to have the plug chopped off and replaced with an Australian one.

So is this the best way of doing this? Or can something be sourced from within Australia?

There's two ways to go about it.
For Teslas that don't have the optional "second charger" installed (and thus max out at 16A on 3phase or 11-12kW) you can buy a ~$130 adapter from Tesla (Sydney or Melbourne) that plugs into the Tesla supplied mobile charger (which is supplied with each car with an Australian 10A "tail" but can handle up to 16A 3phase) and has a European style 16A 3phase plug

You then have a sparky wire up a couple of cables with Euro style 16A socket and Aussie style 20A or 32A 3phase plugs.

Tim at Jet Charge is currently making up a bunch of Euro->Aussie adapter cables for Tesla owners (pending supply of the European sockets)

For those with dual chargers that want to charge at the maximum rate of 32A 3phase (23-24kW) you need an EVSE like Marc's "bag of tricks" - which Jet Charge can also supply (with Euro plug chopped off and Aussie plug fitted)

Just remember AS3000 doesn't require RCD on powerpoints over 20amps. so all the 3 phase sockets won't be RCD protected.

Has anyone had experience with the Lugenergy Wallbox unit shown here? http://www.evportable.com

It appears a mite cheaper than the Max Charger.

Wire up your own from the mob charger 16A 415V over 10kW. Use solar MC ferrules-some electrical knowledge needed.
