Chevy Bolt motor / transaxle teardown

Post by jonescg »

I really love watching these videos by John Kelly and the Weber Auto team.

The Bolt motor and transaxle is an outstanding bit of engineering. I love the way the driveshaft goes right through the rotor :D
Also notice how big the entire assembly is - smaller than a watermelon but good for 150 kW. And 13 moving parts if you're generous.

I wonder when these units will come on the market along with a control module of aftermarket control module. they would make a great drive unit for converting just about any ICE to all electric drive.

I count each ball/roller in a bearing as a separate moving part...

What about the splines in each of the stub axles? Do you count each spline or just the 2 stub axles? The ball or roller could be a separate moving part, but it can only be serviced as a complete brg assembly, so it really is only one part. I wonder how the ceramic bearing would go in that application, less friction and not as critical regarding lubrication or heat stress. Somehow I can see that oil filter becoming an external spin on assembly further up the track and maybe an external coolant to oil heat exchanger for the warmer climates like Australia.
