Dealer can tell you kWhs in iMiEV

Post by Peter C in Canberra »

I asked my local Mitsubishi iMiEV service guy about any read out he might have on battery health. So, after a recent service, our MY2012, made in 2011, iMiEV's service report had an extra line saying it has 12.9kWh. I asked if that data was available from earlier services. I was interested to have some extra data points. Was it declining more rapidly more recently or did it drop quite a bit when new but has now plateaued or is it just linear? Unfortunately he said he had only recently learned how to get that extra data. Extrapolating and interpreting a bit from what he said, I think the software infers a battery capacity from tracking the rate of rise of voltage while charging at a constant rate. Certainly he said it was not necessary to fully discharge to get this number out.
I typically have a range remaining guesstimated at 100km (a bit more in summer, a bit less in winter) and that has not changed noticeably in the last 4 years since we got the car as an ex-demo two years old already with about 20,000km already.
Anyway, from now on, I will be asking the service guy to include the kWh rating of the battery on each report.

I would love to see iMiev battery graph vs time. I've done mine on Leaf (taken from LeafSpy):

PS: I can't find info on the all knowing Google what on earth exactly 'Hx' is. My guess is capacity available shown on the GOM (Guess O Meter), since my range on the GOM reflects having 55% of 24kWh.

From what I read of Li-ion cells, the capacity of the battery appears to drop rapidly at first, then kind of slow down. It always drops, but the rate of drop is frighteningly quick at the start but kind of normal after a few years/1000 cycles.

Yes the value is available in MUT-3 that MMAU use for diagnostics. When a battery recalibration is performed that value is reset as well and repopulated after driving.

I now have two data points! Last week we had the airbag recall done and I asked to be told the battery capacity result as well. Previously it was 12.9kWh. Now 12.7kWh. The little change is reassuring because I had the feeling the range remaining guess-o-meter has been telling me lower numbers lately in spite of warmer weather.

I lost a fair bit over winter but recovered all but maybe 10 km since it warmed up.Bummer.
12.5 kWh is a fair bit down from the notional 16. It is probably similar to my 2010, but I think yours should have the newer , better cells than mine.
Anyway, I have what I have and if it degrades to much I decide what to do.

Do you check your tyre pressure regularly? iMiEV tyres are notorious for slowly deflating.

Here is my iMiEV data obtained via OBD from my EvBatMon Android & iPhone App -
