The other day we observed an interesting behaviour with the Outlander PHEV fuel storage system.. We parked the car on a sealed road with a significant slope down to the left and a moderate slope down to the rear. The fuel tank was about one third full. When we returned to the car and turned it on, the vehicle was indicating an empty fuel tank and flashing the REFUEL message. We drove a short distance so that the vehicle was close to level in the left-right direction and facing slightly down-hill. The same fuel indications persisted. We turned the car off, waited a few moments then turned the car on again but the same fuel indications persisted. We then drove to a petrol station and filled the tank. It took about 30 litres as expected with a 45 litre tank initially about one third full. From then on the fuel indications returned to normal. Apparently parking in that particular position with that level of fuel in the tank upset the system's fuel level measurement device. Changing the orientation of the vehicle and turning the power off and on did not reset the measurement system, but it reset on filling the tank.
