since I've changed the rear Dunlops I haven't heard the water running sound.
Will be interesting to see if others get the same.
I wonder if I'm the first to change the rears?

The water sound referred to in this case is the water splashing around the wheel arch when driving slow in rain or through puddles. Probably occurs on most ICE cars but you don't get to hear it over the infernal combustion.

I can assure you the difference is outstanding ! .... And I can't see any consumption change.
I'm surprised that the front tyres on my iMiEV look near the wear indicators after only 20Kkm of use and when purchasing I wondered if someone had swapped them with another car however all the dealer stock looked pretty worn on the fronts.
Acmotor it sounds like you were getting 30-40Kkm or more from your fronts before changing, I wonder if that is due to so much straight line driving vs city roundabouts eating the fronts?
Is the wear on your new tires proving satisfactory as they sound cheaper than the OEM dunlops too? How many km have you done on the new fronts now?

due to my track racing, my kumhos' shoulders seem to be worn according to Ken, Bob Jane Joondalup
i changed the tyres around 40k kms now done 58k kms.
so perhaps your imiev was being fanged around in demos.
currently the imiev feels a bit like a drift car when going through roundabouts.

Looking underneath my i when I bought it, I reckon my demo did a few laps around the Bunbury speedway. Fine red dust underneath...

Our 2010 model had 19350km when we bought it in October, and had just had both front tyres replaced, so presumably they were worn. I'm not sure if I've done well getting one with new tyres, or should be suspicious there may be a problem that caused them to wear fast.

It's a pretty insignificant down-side to the iMiev though. Those front tyres were just a bit of a mistake. Copy acmotors lead when you replace them.mikedufty wrote: Our 2010 model had 19350km when we bought it in October, and had just had both front tyres replaced, so presumably they were worn. Think about it this way. Your a car yard trying to sell a almost 5 year old car with potentially 6 year old tires ( from date of manufacturer) tires that are most likely 60+% worn. Im sure fresh tread helps satisfy the potential new owners.
To add to this who is to say one of the tires wasn't damaged. Unless they were almost new you usually just replace both.
My stock font tires have 17,000km (dirt roads are hard on tires to) they look like they would go to 25,000km or so.
It's a small tire with a shallow tread holding up 1080kg of car. It's a tire you would more typically see fitted to a very small car in the 600-800kg range.

It sounds like considerable wear by 20,000km is fairly typical, so it was good to get one with new tyres. They were actually replaced in January (before the dealer got it). Several of the other 2010 iMiEVs at the lot had fronts that looked like they could do with replacement soon. Does seem unusual for a rear wheel drive car.

Ac motor measured his tread depth (look back on this thread) 2.6 - 4.2mm tread depth in different locations across the front tires at 43,000km. The wear limit on the tire is 1.6mm. So perhaps they would have been illegal by 50,000km but a good safe 40,000km from them.
I must drive my Imiev a lot harder, more twisty roads or perhaps more aggressive road surfaces. Driving in the rain and dirt roads wears tires faster. As I measured my front tires new (fronts 6.2mm new) and now just again at 17,000km (now 4.2mm)So my wear at 17,000km is about the same as Ac motors was at 28,000km.
I think I will be at the min tread depth (1.6mm) by 28k and defiantly wouldn't get anywhere near 40k from them. They are wearing nice and even just faster than AC motors...time will tell.

Spotted this in Singapore on an ICE i-car, 185/55 R15s squeezed onto the front rims. I don't think the photo does just to how wrong it looked, but impressive that they will fit.

Thanks for the update, just about to put continental ecocontac3 in 155x60 R15 on my fronts unless you have thought of a better option, how long do you think your new fronts will last all-up, 50Kkm? I think you do mostly straight line, do you think roundabouts will eat the 155x60 any worse than stock?

I'm still very happy with the continentals on the front due to the massive improvement in crosswind stability over the dunlops. There must be other LRR tyres out there however when you are on a good thing...
Maybe a three groove tyre is more stable than a four groove as a steering tyre ?
I had expected to be able to extract data on increased energy usage but there just isn't any change. Obviously LRR design is different between tyre manufacturers. They all just claim they are the best.
Looks like all iMiEVs wear the front tyres almost twice as fast as the rears so 50kkm is perhaps at the top end of life expectancy.
The continentals are well less on wear than the dunlops at 30kkm each.

My 2 bob: generally the narrowest tyre on the widest rim you can fit gives the best handling. Narrower tyres have less tyre wall flex during cornering.

Maybe the case and makes sense and perhaps the profile plays a big part, but the situation with the iMiEV in crosswinds is one of tracking stability rather than cornering. This stability significantly improved with the 155 vs 145 tyres as others who have made the change also found. Mind you, it may be more a factor of tyre design than actual width.

New tyres are 155 as opposed to 145 though almost identical in rolling diameter due to profile change. Check back through this thread.
In theory, 6.9% wider. In practice, a world apart in stability !

Yes, the 60 and 65 are profile numbers. The 150 and 145 are widths.
Rolling diameter almost identical. Same rim size specified.
Result for iMiEV ... brilliant !

Joseph reckoned the steering was a bit heavier. Do you find that?
