I hope they sort this out by the time the 2nd gen leaf comes out
The degradation is non linear
Also depends on driving conditions
Eg gradient
Nissan is the only one that provides a state if health meter
Tesla monitors it but puts that info deeply hidden away.

This video was last year...
As mentioned by Andy, the new leaf is largely a local manufacture for US and UK exercise with little other change. Maybe a few tweeks.
Battery capacity change with time is a classic reverse logarithmic curve. More pronouced than say Lead acid that is more linear with a final fall over. Nothing surprising there.
Interesting comment that the nissan thinking is pack is for life of the vehicle. Probably common for others. Is there a comment from Tesla ?
The bit I picked up on was the intention for 'backward compatability at the cell or module level'(not battery pack, that makes sense). This to address present EV owner's thoughts of a new technology battery in the future.
I record, on external kWh meter, each recharge on iMiEV. I think that will show pack kWh un-questionably. At 28,000km I'm yet to see a change. But I'm only one year in.

Is there such a word as degragation?

Today marks 12 months I have had my LEAF. 22500km. So far no battery degradation observed.
But then most people wouldn't call Melbourne a "hot climate"

That is good news Leigh.
I'm thinking that the battery degradation speculation may be just that and we will all be delighted with the long term performance.

Don't get me wrong. Capacity degradation in Li-ion batteries is a real issue for all EV owners, including me, and is dependant on climate. My Samsung Galaxy S3 is only 12 months old and barely lasts 18 hours before requiring charging (was significantly longer when new).
There is a significant discussion of this on the mynissanleaf wiki
http://www.mynissanleaf.com/wiki/index. ... acity_Loss
Based on the battery capacity model used there, I can expect something like:
1 year = 92.5%
2 years = 89.4%
3 years = 86.7%
5 years = 82%
10 years = 72%
These figures don't worry me particularly as I can live with this level of degradation.
I'll keep watching for any capacity loss but I'm not really concerned at the moment. I just enjoy driving this great car.
If I lived in Alice Springs I might be more worried.

Winge, winge. Take, take. The slow blink is scary !
My EV 'won't drive from Mexico to Canada.' I quote at 5:12 into the vid !
Nissan you've given me a great EV now I just want more.
A free holiday house in the Med. at least !
I'm not content with the 8 year 100,000 mile battery warranty (more than Oz !)
I've just trailered duh! my EV 400 miles to proove that.... ummm batteries will degrade, 'coz nobody thought about it at nissan. Only me !
What is required is a control.
No good driving the vehicle to turtle now if it wasn't compared with same when new.
A far better test is to measure the recharge kWh. From empty to full charge. That tells you if the battery capacity is degrading.
Turtle. Why is it that people are prepared to drive to turtle and then keep pushing 'till it stops altogether ?
This is never good practice for any chemical battery. 80% is as deep as you should plan to go. If I were Nissan BMS then I'd catch on that the driver was battery unfriendly and show them the turtle at about 60% discharge and stop by 80%. That way the battery would stand a chance.
Good thing is that this guy will sell his Leaf and someone out there can snatch up a bargain as the second hand EVs start to filter through the market. Already they are cheaper than a conversion.

Are batteries packs available now, if we want to change them in 5 years time? I've seen a Nissan Leaf in Darwin and Im curious if I do bump into the owner of this car to ask them how is their battery is going.

Jeffjl lost his first bar at 8500km
Thank you g4qber, seems like some of the guys on that forum brought theirs for $39K to 37K of late and now you could get it for $33K from the Gold Coast. Be really interested if the Gen 2 or 3 will come here. I was reading on some web sites that a battery pack is more available than the i-miev and some forums in the US said they are worth about $11K US dollars to purchase if you really want to replace it.

If the cars have been sitting for 3-4 years and battery has not been maintained, then quick loss would be expected. Dealers typically fully charged the batteries, had a short test drive then sit in the lot for months, worst case for the battery longevity.
We can only hope the battery loses 4 bars before warranty runs out and Nissan honours the warranty.
