VFD on PMSM

Post by Richo »

Has anyone tried a PMSM (Brushless AC) motor on a standard VFD sub 2.4kW?

I know that some of the washing machines have direct drive motors that have magnet motors with sinusoidal BEMF.
I want to try test one with an off the shelf VFD.
Normally the VFD is for an induction motor so and many of them don't mention if they will work with a PMSM.

Is it a case of setting the name plate ratings ( v /f) and go?
So the short answer is NO but the long answer is YES.

VFD on PMSM

I can't answer your question for sure but my opinion is that it will not work unless the VFD has BLDC or PMAC as a setting.
It will try to establish magnetising current in the rotor - no idea how that will damage the permanent magnets.
Maybe if it has the option of no magnetising current that may infer that it'll work.
Lotta maybes...

Yep looks like your right.
A VFD will only work on a PM motor if it has the code for it.
A standard IM VFD wont work.
I had thought setting the slip to zero.
But I'd say it's still has the wrong motor model to run the PM motor.

Worse still some VFD say they can do PM motors but the fine print says it requires a firmware upgrade to do it!
So the short answer is NO but the long answer is YES.

Here is an example of a VFD with control for PM motors.
