I have just uploaded my eighth video to YouTube which shows the construction of the adaptor plate: here.
This was produced by Ray Hammat from Hammat Precision Engineering at Marion.
Manufactured from a 32mm steel plate (20Kg) turned on the lathe to very exceptionally close tolerances with every measurement taken from the gearbox and motor with a resultant 6Kg all-in-one adapter plate/spacer/locater.
A high res version of the video is available here.
Ray is now working on my coupler.

Lovely work Ric. I am new to machining, so the video was really interesting. I didn't realise that a lathe could rotate an irregularly shaped object like that.
So on the Barina you need that extra spacer segment? My Charade just has a flat plate.
Do you have some locating dowels? I had problems with alignment that I recently fixed, as no dowels were fitted by my machinist.
For EV#2 (another Charade using Goombi's Chinese kit) I am looking at getting a mild steel adaptor plate laser cut from CAD information. That way the CAD files will be useful for others.

Thanks David, Yes, I needed to space the motor our slightly.
I didn't need dowels because of the way the plate's made. The centre section of the adaptor plate fits into the motor with interference fit. There is no room for error.
All of the holes and the centre were measured directly from the gearbox using a centering tool then the plate was drilled/marked in that position (plate off-measure, plate on-drill etc).
The video shows the gearbox mounted under the drill press.
The CAD file idea is great.
You should give a short talk about Goombi's Chinese kit at the next meeting this would be interesting for many people I reckon (I don't think we have a speaker yet!),
If you can, please let Geoff know (and me for the website).

Sure I would happy to give a talk on the 28th on "Low Cost EVs".
Re the adaptor plate location - OK, I understand the motor is a tight fit to the plate. So what accurately locates the plate to the bell housing? Is there also some sort of interference fit? Many people use dowels between the plate and the bell housing as bolt holes usually have some clearance and hence slop.
Sorry if I have missed something! I am keen to learn about this sort of stuff as machining is a new game to me
Cheers,
David

Yes, sorry there are dowels (original Suzuki) from bell housing to adaptor plate. No additional dowels were required.
About the talk, Thanks... I'll update the website now.

Hi all,
I have now placed another video on YouTube showing the coupler here.
Here it is... test fit onto the motor shaft.

Have just installed Solar PV System on our roof...meter goes backwards!
Check it out on YouTube.
Import/Export meter to be installed soon - then $0.40 for every KWH fed back into the grid - thank you very much!

Nice one Eric, good to see your conversion moving along! My wife is off on an EV range test today, all over town including a trip to Belair....

Excellent work on both the car and the slideshow. However might I suggest that instead of having a label on ever slide, just limiting it to only when you change the topic, so the same writting isn't covering what people are trying to look at.
Excellent work though, you should be proud of your efforts

Thanks, I'll try and make another version without so much writing for the website.
After checking the video...
No I won't... it's fine. The writing doesn't get in the way of the information.
