Not really but apparently Fred Nurk worries about it...

Range Anxiety killed the EV1?

Those car companies talk a lot of BS, there is no way in hell that it costs more to build an EV than an ICE powered car. The problem they have is convincing the market that they are expensive so they can continue to have huge margins on sales.

Range Anxiety killed the EV1?

Post by Richo »

Generally I don't try to drive my petrol car further than what I have left in the tank.
So why would I do it in an eV?

If this is an issue the solution is simple:
1. Have an RAC truck pick your eV up and take it home.
2. Have an RAC truck with 22kVA genset come out and quick charge your eV.

So many nay sayers Image

How do they think the RAC started?
people driving further than what was in thier tank!

For the odd person who forgets to check the charge gauge in their eV can wait the 30min for the RAC genset and pay for the service.

Can also look at it from the proint of view of car manufacturer media.
The new Hol*&^ does 900km on one tank.
You NEED 900km from one tank.
these ev's with 100km range get real you NEED 900km.
Any less than 900km range and you could run out and be left stranded.

why?
There is a petrol station every 200km.
There is a power point every 0.02km.

So the short answer is NO but the long answer is YES.

Yeah! What Richo said!

Have to recharge every 100km is waaaay better than have to go to the Servo every 400km, since recharge happens at home, 20 second job when you get out of the car in the garage, compared to 10 minutes job when you are on your way somewhere.

Here is an exercise for every AEVA forum member.
Each morning reset the trip meter in your car.
Every night record your days travel, in a months time we can collate the data.

We have discussed this before - it's perception. People are used to what they have.

That's right people are use to vehicles that do 500+km on a tank.
So hard to impress people with a 100km range eV.
Seems like a step back even though they don't really need it.
So the short answer is NO but the long answer is YES.

Range Anxiety killed the EV1?

Post by Electrocycle »

yep, a lot of the people I've talked to about my bike projects expect that an EV needs enough range that you charge it once a week - even though it's no hassle to charge it every night - which is beneficial even if it does have a week's range!

It's also amazing the number of people who ask if it can charge itself as it drives.
Even electronics people seem to assume that anything rotating means you can get free power from it!

Indeed! Even some mechanics think alternators make electricity for "free".
Its also interesting alot of people dont understand how EV's charge. "You plug it in or do you swap the batteries?". That sort of thing.

Man, that EV1 sounds like it was great. 160+km of range! I could get everywhere I need to go and back with that sort of range, no worries.
I'll drive an electric vehicle one day.

A great read Simon. He's an interesting character. Yes, the EV1 sounds like a great car. One of the world's great shames that they are mostly gone.

"...why not? With NiMH batteries, the EV1 has a 140 mile range!"
So they did have NiMH. I saw somewhere ( it is probably also mentioned on this forum.. ) who had the patents, and was sitting on them.
But, are they the best current (sorry, puns are hard to avoid) battery technology? Better than LiFePO ? At least until Lithium sulphur, or silicon nanotubes (or whatever) comes in?

Anyway, range extenders - here is one better than a reciprocating engine.

I love turbines. I was dreaming of putting a turbine or two in my 62 valiant (fins and chrome beg for turbines) to make a series hybrid. Chrysler had a turbine program in the mid 60s, had test cars with families (75,000rpm motors) but scrapped it all (The EV1 wasn't the first program to finish at the crusher)
I didn't think the air bearings would cope well with car use, but see how they go :-)
Batmobile exhaust would be way cool, and discourage tailgaters...

And people are used to having what they think they need (or aspire to):
* Large 4WD suburban taxis
* 250km/h+ Lambo/Ferrari/Porsche/BMW/...
* 3.5 tonne towing capacity (for a Jetski)

One challenge for EVs will be addressing people's desires to have a vehicle that can do it all, e.g. a daily driver that will also carry the family at the weekend. Looking at the markets/customers current EV manufacturer's are pitching at, most are going for the city commuter - that is, a vehicle designed to suit the magical 80-90% number that is always quoted as covering the average person's driving needs.
But most folks still look at the ~100km range and think that they'll have to stop every hour to recharge when they head off at the weekend and just see the inconvenience. There's a way to go before these people change their perceptions of their needs - or accept alternative modes of transport to cover their various needs.

Making EVs sexy/trendy/cool will help overcome range anxiety. Woody's batmobile turbine is a winner. Image

I'm sure in the future our grandchildren will look at us with astonishment and ask if we realy used to pour smelly, highly volatile, expensive, polluting, poisonous liquid into our vehicles to make them run.

BTW - what were the specs of the EV1 battery pack (voltage, kWh)?

I was amazed at the John Wayland experience of increased range estimation with highway cruising at 58 mph and the seemingly small impact on battery SOC following 70-75 mph highway driving. (Thanks for sharing the link!)

I'd be interested to know what sort of real-world EV highway range people are getting from their own vehicles.
