G'day.

I just wanted to kick things off.

Has there been any electric drag racing in this part of the world?

Would I be correct in thinking that drag racing would be a good format for electric racing because range is not really an issue?

Here's a link to the U.S. National Electric Drag Racing Association:

NEDRA intend running a points score for EV drag racers in 2015. A quick read of the rules suggests that international competitors might be eligible...

Really
1.1MW = 1100kW
1400HP = 1044kW

It's like saying you can get a teaspoon of sugar using a teaspoon.

I doubt it's 1400HP at the wheels or even at the Motor shaft.
5% losses through the battery, wiring, controller and motor...
esp on a 200V system.

Nice upgrade from white zombie tho.
So the short answer is NO but the long answer is YES.

That isn't a replacement for John Wayland's White Zombie though, it's a guy trying to start a supercar business, which John provided some input on.

I'm not sure if Fortitude Valley is quite up to the standards of Kings Cross and the Oxford St Drag Queens, but the racing there involves either big chunky platform boot or stilettos making the drag racing quite a spectacle   Image

Still think it will be worth following the progress of to see how it goes. When I first saw it 6-12 months ago it wasn't going all that quick.

The Black Zombie certainly is a different beast in every sense of the work, not a small light weight unit, I doubt it would be a drag race star, but top speed over the mile, that is impressive. The acceleration off the mark in such a big car running over 200v must be something you would have to experience to truly appreciate. I remember back to the days when I was building turbocharged street racers, even though the Cortina running the turbo 6 was much faster in both acceleration and terminal speed over the 1/4 mile, the full bodied XE Falcon felt much faster and the acceleration feel lasted for so much longer it really felt like it had more power than it really did.... hard to explain but I can understand the buzz he talks about when planting the foot in the big bodied Mustang.

I know what you mean Terry, my GT3076R / 2 litre 180sx would have probably run 10's (unfortunately never made it back to the dyno or track before accident) but it never had the same kind of torque impact that a mates big cube car that ran low 10's had. It pinned you so hard it was difficult to pull yourself out of the seat.

The black zombie ran at least 12.1's from one video. Not quick, but definitely not too shabby for electric.

now, if I can just get that sort of acceleration for Big Bus....we is all allowed to dream eh Image 0 to 100km/h over the measure mile will probably be more like it Image

Now, I love the idea of a Top EV drag car, but has this vehicle ever turned a wheel? He's been promoting the crap out of it and launching unveilings everywhere, but has he even got a powertrain for it?

Also, if it's a roller, he might as well bring it to the AGM and EV Festival. Or at least Electrikhana next year.

I'm glad it's not just me.... I thought I was becoming cynical in my old age. Pretty amazing claims/goals they have set.

The Tesla fan boys get all giddy about insane and ludicrous modes now getting the model S down to 2.8 seconds 0-60. Though it's kind of put to shame when you compare it to drag cars. I think the white zombie was around 1.8 seconds 0-60.

Then you start talking building a EV version of a top fuel category car. Your doing 0 to 530 km/h in 3.6 seconds (To be at the pointy end of the competition) and 0 - 160kph in 0.8 seconds. That's going to take some serious battery. Hey we are only talking 8MW of power and over 8,000 newton meters of torque for the power plant and the complete package has to weigh about one ton then it might be competitive.

Top Fuel cars reach 100kph before the back wheel cross the start line. (now that's ludicrous mode!)

I would love to see a ev rail it sure would push the limits and perhaps break some new ground.

No mention of any drivetrain components. So I guess they don't exist....just yet.

Maybe requires a big supporter to fund the drivetrain. It won't be cheap for those performance goals...

Michael has had a very successful in high end SPL car audio. EV drag racing is a way different beast...

Been waiting for Don Garlits to crack the 200mph, but has only managed 184mph so far. Think others in the U.S. may beat him to the mark, which would be a shame since he was the first to do it in a Top Fueller.
