Perth solar powered electric ferries!

Post by jonescg » Wed, 22 Jul 2015, 21:20

Hi all,

Kevyn Townley has started his Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for another Perth-based Australian first - an electric ferry service on the Swan River!

http://bit.ly/littleferry

His aim is to have the ferries on the water by early October for testing, and a full scheduled service running in November this year. The October timing is great as it means AEVA members visiting from over east for the National AGM can catch a ferry ride down the Swan River to Fremantle where our meetings will be held.

Check out their website here: http://www.littleferryco.com.au/holdingpage/

Please consider supporting this project! Western Australia was the first state in the nation to have a complete Electric Highway, and we can be the first to have a solar powered, battery electric ferry service on our river!

Perth solar powered electric ferries!

Sounds like a great idea.
But it would help if he had some technical specs.
It's hard to get interested in an Electric boat where he is just promo'ing a boat that appears to be just like any other boat.
There is no mention of anything electric about it - other than a title.

I was going to say surely they need a genset for backup like solar sailor but it's a much smaller boat than I imagined.

I was going to give it two thumbs up but I think the batteries let it down. Image
So I'll only give it one thumb up Image

So the cells are either Toshiba or Panasonic which is fine.
But quoting 800 cycles and claiming you'd be lucky to get 500 doesn't sound appealing.
It will get you going and meet your regs but I'd start planning now for something better to replace it with in 3-5 years.

In all definitely worth contributing and I'm eager for Swan tour the EV way Image
