The bizarre thing is, what is actually stored in the WebWiz database, and what therefore makes translation of posts a complete bastard, is not HTML or BBCode but an unholy mixture of the two.
Line-breaks and text formatting and links, images and smilies are all stored as HTML, and so when you choose "Edit this post" they must be translated back into BBCode. Does that remind you of a few bugs we've seen over the years?
But other BBCodes, such as [ quote ], [ code ], [ tube ] are left as BBCodes, so that whenever the page is displayed, they must first be translated to HTML.
PhpBB also stores posts as an unholy mixture of BBCode and HTML, but a completely different kind of mixture from that used by WebWiz. PhpBB stores posts mostly as BBCode, and line breaks remain as plain-text carriage-return characters, not as <br /> tags as they are stored in WebWiz, but they still contain some HTML that must be converted back to plain text when you click Edit.

Many thanks to everyone for checking that first-pass test-conversion.
Rob gave Coulomb and I passwords to this temporary forum so we could check how profiles and private messages had fared, and check what happened when we tried to edit an existing post.
The good news is, private messages have all been converted (although they have the same kinds of formatting problems as posts, as you would expect).
Some fields of our profiles had not been transferred, although fields exist for them in phpBB. We expect this to be easily fixed. But the biggest problem was edits, which generated the following rather long bug report:
24. We need to be able to see the BBCodes when we edit converted posts in phpBB. Preferably the same BBCodes we see when we edit them in WebWiz. As it stands, if we click "Edit" for a converted post in phpBB, all the text formatting, links, images, smilies, youtubes, quotes and code are _lost_. They just vanish. This is apparently because they have been converted to HTML, and HTML is stripped on Edit. In the case of the text formatting BBCodes ([ b], [ i], [ u], [ center], [ font], [ size], [ color]), [ url], [ img] and smilies (and presumably [ email]), this conversion was done by WebWiz itself, in which case their HTML needs to be converted back to BBCodes for phpBB. In the case of [ tube], [ quote] and [ code] (and presumably [ hide] and [ flash]) they are already BBcodes in WebWiz and only need to be copied over, without converting them to HTML (but converting them to lowercase and inserting a bbcode_uid before every closing square bracket). We also need the [ tube], [ center] and [ font=] BBCodes to be defined in phpBB by adding their patterns and replacements using the appropriate admin control panel. Fixing this bug may fix many others.
In case any of you software engineers out there are wondering what a bbcode_uid is, I did some research and experimentation (which included the four posts above), and turned up the following phpBB tutorial: https://wiki.phpbb.com/Tutorial.Parsing_text.
Anyhow, we decided which bugs Rob can deal with after gConverter have finished, and which were part of gConverter's remit, sent them off to gConverter, and received the following encouraging reply:
"Thank you for your email. We’re currently checking issues in order to fix them."
So we will let you know when we have a second-pass (on the same old snapshot) for you all to take a look at.

Hi All,
Well, it's taken much longer than we expected, but we reckon we've finally got a data conversion that we can run with.
Firstly, I'd like to acknowledge the huge effort from Weber and Coulomb in helping test numerous iterations of the new forum while we got the data conversion bugs ironed out.
I know that a number of you care as deeply as we do about the information in this forum, so I encourage you to go to the test site and check it out: http://forums.aeva.net.au. If you want to log in, use the same Username as you do for this forum, but you'll have to go through the "forgot my password" caper (passwords are about the only thing we can't copy over) or else pm me if you have any problems.
Please also remember that our test forum has been converted using the original data snapshot which is now over a month old, so don't expect to see your latest post there!
Unless anyone discovers any showstoppers in the next 24 hours or so, I plan to start the migration process fairly shortly after that (within a few days).
I'll post more detail about how the final migration will work (with a fresh snapshot of the forum of course) after you've finished your checking.
If you find any major problems in the test forum, please post them here.
Happy Testing!

Thank you to all who put in the effort. My old posts on the test site look just fine to me.

Don't forget to check your private messages, if any. I have quite a few, and I found that the formatting in the "Previous post" sections was missing newlines, and had some spaces turned into "capital A with hat" characters. This is no big deal to me, and I certainly don't want it to delay the conversion, but others may have information that would suffer with bad processing of spaces. If so, let us know by posting here; Rob may be able to fix it with a global edit using a script.

Hi All,
The forum migration is finally ready to go.
I plan to shut down this WebWiz forum tomorrow (Tuesday) at around 09:30 UTC (20:30 AEDT, 17:30 WA time), back it up and hand the data over to gConverters. They think the conversion will take 6-7 hours so I hope to have the new (phpBB) forum up and running by Wednesday morning. As soon as it is running, each forum member with a valid email address will receive an email explaining how to log in and reset your password. You will need to reset your password because they are encrypted and that prevents us from copying them over.
If you have any questions about this, please post them here.
Cheers,
