Here is a survey to see what interest there is in commercial electric vehicles.

Please take the few minutes it takes to fill out. You can see the progressive results after you’re done.

EV Survey

Hi,
I did the survey and as usual :), I would have preferred some other options.

The question about whether an ev could be your only car or could only be a 2nd car was muddy. Similar to whether a holiday house should be your only house or a 2nd house. It can be either, depending on your circumstances. Some people may never choose to drive between cities or on a tour. In that case, they would never need more than an ev and it would be their best choice.

I also noted that the type of vehicle preferred would be seen according to current offerings and where there's only one choice for particular types of vehicles at the moment. The range-extender is surely the Volt, the hybrid is the Prius (though it can also be the Camry).
I chose the range extender (and in doing so I thought, well, only if it has a range of around 60-80ks on battery alone, and I doubt that it has, at least in my hilly country).
I could just as easily have chosen the plug-in hybrid, if it has li-ion batteries and a range of 60-80ks and not the crummy 20ks or whatever it WILL BE if they ever sell it here.
So, I hope that my input doesn't sway too many people on what I choose for the future, the range extending vehicle. First, they have to tell me what sort of range extending vehicle it is.
Above all, I would choose an ev alone, under all circumstances, in this day and age, where the only other option was to only have a petrol/diesel car.

I think that's the point of the survey. To find out what portion of people interested in EVs want one as an only car vs a 2nd car. It's a given that anyone filling out the survey will have an interest in EVs, so asking "would you have one?" would not be informative at all. The survey proctors are trying to get an idea of what peoples circumstances are.

I can't look at the questions again because it won't let me go to other pages but I think it asked whether an ev could ONLY be a 2nd car, which is what I take exception to.

If you drive your ev all year and go to Sydney in an ic car for a week, which is your 2nd car? Which has the greater value, the savings in fuel and emissions over the year or the ability to use the ic vehicle, in particular, to make the trip.

If you decide to travel to Adelaide from Brisbane and take the bus, train or plane because you decide it's too far to drive, is there any need to keep an ic vehicle as a 2nd car?

If you do this but fly to Sydney and rent an ev for the week, which is cheaper over the year?

Anyway, I want to pretend that there is an inbuilt mindset in the survey. Is there one?

I drove the electron all this past week and it really is a different world amongst the idling masses.

A good survey I thought!

Thanks for putting it together.. just filled it in.

Hope you send the results to Holden, Nissan and Mitsubishi.

Another comment , is I would not consider the better place type rental of batteries at all.

Cheers, Marty

* I don't believe there is actually a question asking about first or second cars. There is a question asking whether a respondent owns a conversion and/or a commercial EV.

* The results of the survey are open to all, so I would expect that the manufacturers would be having a look!

I retained the concept of first and second cars simply from having done the survey and retaining thoughts about it. At first, I chose not to attempt to go through the survey again because surveys are for individuals to give their opinions, provided they agree with the gist of the questions.
So, in order to see if I should believe or not believe, I did the survey again :)   How many times may I do the survey?

I see now that it was an indirect reference to 2nd cars. This is Q. 22.

With commercially produced EV's comfortably travelling in excess of 100 kilometres per charge, do you believe they offer a viable alternative for most motorists?
Yes
No
As a second car

Today, we're still dealing with people who drive each day from the Gold Coast to Brisbane, From Noosa to Brisbane (and sit in stop/start traffic on the "freeway" to get there some mornings).

Here, this is a question for "most motorists" :)

What do most motorists think their alternatives are?

The few crappy offerings referred to in this survey because each "type" represents just one Brand from one manufacturer (2 for battery cars).

So people taking part in this survey are giving answers based on locked-in minds thinking about one brand model of car for its type while driving ridiculous distances because that's what we've always been able to do.

The Manufacturers would look at this survey but I hope to hell they don't try to use any part of it for their already-established plans.

Drive past any dealership and observe the ev offerings.

Can anyone say, I drove past X and there were 2 leafs, whatevers in a prominent place, saying "Buy me".

Anyway, I might do the survey a few more times once I decide which direction I want to push :)

See, here's the thing. Most motorists drive well-within the range of the current (first offerings, really) commercial ev's.

What do most motorists think? They look at what's for sale on the car lots and in the showrooms and they see what they expect to see, exactly what they've always seen.

You buy a computer of exactly the type you want, probably not desktop any more, probably not notebook (but maybe), maybe i something, maybe andr something, but it can only do what you want it to. Let's stop pretending that a specialist car has no place in our future plans. Yes, we might want to edit film and need a desktop computer, but after a while, most people realise that they rarely do it. Do most people need a desktop?

Still, if reports are to be believed, industry knows the truth and are predicting huge changes to ev numbers on the roads (you've probably seen them), this in the face of closed car company strategy. If it's got a combustion motor in it, we can carry on as usual, the way things are supposed to be. But we're all here because we don't believe it.
