Quotes disappearing from URL links; workaround

Post by coulomb »

I've had an image search on the MX-5 build page for some time. It worked OK, but somehow the single and double quotes that are needed to make the search very specific to our build pages are removed by the forum software. So instead of searching for "Weber and Coulomb's MX-5" it searches for those terms without the double or single quotes. So it gives some preference to pages from our build site, but other pages with just have the word MX-5, or even MX, would also be included in the results.

Today I added a text search as well, and the same thing happens there.

To work around this, I now use tinyurl.com to generate an alternate URL, which happens to be shorter, but more importantly doesn't have any quotes or double quotes in it. If you try this yourself, make sure that you put the "http://" at the front of the long URL, because if you don't, you get a 404 error (e.g. http://tinyurl.com/7mw7eyh).

It seems to work well. To try out what I've done, see

and scroll down 2 or 3 pages to get to the text and image searches (in larger, blue font). Yes, I could put it closer to the top of the page, but everything wants to be near the top of the page, so I'll leave it for now. Maybe the searches will become more popular now that they are more specific.
