Hey Chums,
http://www.instructables.com/id/200kW-A ... ctric-Car/
Thinking about getting my feet wet by jumping in the deep-end.
Generally my question is will this controller linked above end up costing more than using something off the shelf already? Or be so frustrating to get it to work that it's not worth the effort?
Thanks.

Re: Open source inverter
Very detailed documentation. It looks pretty good to me. Since I have an AC motor and the car is under-controller powered - I find this very interesting too.

Re: Open source inverter
Generally it should cost less than anything off the shelf.
The only cheap alternative is the low voltage curtis stuff.
But I'll warn you that end is very deep..
If you are going around 70kW or above then if you have the ability making it should be cheaper.
Below 70kW there may be motor+controller packages that could be cheaper.
So the short answer is NO but the long answer is YES.

Re: Open source inverter
That power ring cap is weird.
Seems a lot of work goes into fitting it.
Unfortunately I doub't 5-9 similar spec'd standard shaped caps would be cheaper.

And here is the link to the curtis 1239E-85xx
72-144V (170V Max)
500A (1min) - 135A Cont
So ~20kW cont / ~70kW Peak.

http://www.evwest.com/catalog/product_i ... cts_id=230
At a guess landed in AUS would be $4,250 incl duty+tax.
