AC vs`DC debate
Hi,
I am new to the EV world. I have just bought a 2003 Proton Jumbuck for conversion. I have done a lot of reading about the AC vs DC debate. I have come to the comculsion that AC is the way to go. I have had a look at a company in the UK called greenmotorsport.com. They have a complete kit using a 27.5 kW water cooled AC motor. Has anyone had experience with this company or the motors/controllers. Can anyone recommend an Australian supplier of AC motors and controllers ?
Regards
Garry

Have you got prices from GreenMotorSports? I agree that AC is preferable to DC but is more expensive.

Well I guess if you want to start in Australia for AC then:
Tritium

eV Power (maybe could help)

Thanks Richo. I had a look at those sites, lots of nice gear there. What is the 70kW AC motor you have as your forum picture ? Regarding the power I require, I was after an AC motor that would deliver about 60-80 kW. Can you suggest one and a suiteable controller.
Cheers

We've done a fair amount of testing with our controller driving a slightly modified 132-frame SEW Eurodrive copper-rotor induction motor that we're getting 70-75kW out of at the shaft. It's about 60kg, and a little over 90% efficient in cruise.

What's the slight modification to the motor, TJ?

Ah well that's what I am working on.EVFAN wrote: What is the 70kW AC motor you have as your forum picture ?
Sorry it's not available to buy at the moment.
The tritium 132-frame motor with controller sounds like a good option.EVFAN wrote:

Other than this there is not many controllers around for that power range.
This is why the green sport one is a dual motor dual controller.
The only other fall back would be if EV power can get something for you.
The last possibility is using an Industrial Controller which I do not recommend unless you have either used them before or skilled in Electronic/Electrical engineering.
So the short answer is NO but the long answer is YES.

There are the usual suspects like at metric mind.
But you will need deep pockets for importing with no backup.
And I can't see the reason for this in Australia since Tritium have this area covered for us for less $$ with better support.

Thanks for the plug Richo!
Coulomb, the mods are removing the shaft fan, machining down the shaft to suit the encoder, balancing for >6000rpm, adding an encoder, adding a 12V fan.

Good to see some punters are taking up the Proton Jumbuck for conversion
It is of course the perfect candidate. Front wheel drive for easy engine installation, rear tray which can be cut to drop the battery box into, good load carrying GVM, simple layout.
My car has an almost perfect 50:50 weight distribution now. Even with all the batteries in the back, it actually corners on a rail. Much better handling than the original car but smoother ride because there is a bit more weight in the back. Very fun
It has performed flawlessly for 18 months now. Well almost flawlessly. The Unite motor/controller has given some grief. Strangely the BMS which is supposed to drain the battery has worked perfectly all this time.

Wow ! that is a whole 1 star more than a suzuki siera.
Next will be a crash test on a vectrix !
Fortunately crash tests are not the sole decision platform, but worth noting.

Hi Rod,
Thanks for your reply. I had a look at the pics of your Jumbuck. The battery setup looks very neat but I have to ask the question, does cutting the floor of the tray to install the batteries cause you any problems with Rego ? I am trying to avoid making any structure changes at all to the body just to make life easier in terms of certification. I assume it was registerd in WA. I am in NSW. Also I was quite concerned about the ANCAP rating of 1 star! Really makes me think now. I also have a 2001 ForTwo Smart car that I originally thought about converting but thought it too hard. But it does have a 4 star ANCAP rating. Is there anything that can be reasonably done to improve the safety of the Jumbuck ?
Cheers
Garry

haha,
given most conversions are based upon cars that pre-date the testing, I'd say its about average.

Very true.
But there was plenty of crash testing done before Ancap.
The passangers just happen to be in it at the time

Protons are reccomended for very safe drivers!
What is disconcerting is the degree of body deformation and intrusion, leading to guaranteed breakage of lower limbs. It looks like the door hinges break off making the sutuation more severe.
That crash result looks almost exactly the same as the 1 Star Chery crashes. After this, I'm not sure what it takes to score 0 stars.
This one says it all:
Mean great wall and proton crashes in english
I wouldn't be caught dead driving one of those, or I might be...
On the other hand, the old BMW fares better:
BMW 318i 1984 crash test
Excuse the video - no idea what language.
A good chance of walking away.
