local council put in tesla-only charger

Post by drlizau »

My local council, which is not known for good decision making, has put in Tesla only charging https://www.griffith.nsw.gov.au/cp_them ... O-56-40-22
I'd like to start writing to them about this poor choice, providing public space for chargers which don't cater for the full market. How can I get data on numbers of EVs registered in a postcode, in a region, in a State, or in Oz, broken down by manufacturer?
I know that on Thursdays when I park my Leaf in town I park it next to a new Ioniq, so there's two of us not interested in a Tesla charger.

Are they going to be "destination chargers" or superchargers? Perhaps you can ask them to make some 3 phase power points available for non Tesla vehicles. That could be a lot cheaper and more versatile. I was hoping to base myself in Griffith for a few days when restrictions are off again, but I guess I won't be. It will probably be Wagga Wagga instead.

I'll go and look for myself at what has been installed. Narrandera has a NRMA fast charger, and I have an OpenEVSE at an "undisclosed location".

If you know what you're doing, it's a quick switch to put into "legacy Mode" to make it suitable for all type 2 vehicles. (and others with adapters) I would imagine that the council got it for free from tesla and probably don't know any different.
I carry a set of torque screws in my car for just this occasion.

Except with new destos that appears to have no effect now. Same with the destos that were supplied for free with Model 3.

If anyone in a non-Tesla can't charge there, they should demand the council replace them with a non-proprietary charger. Otherwise it's really poor use of ratepayer's money.

Perhaps can tweet Elon to program all HPWCs to be legacy mode ?

According to Harald M, HPWCs can be programmed to be in legacy mode via a Tesla vehicle that is plugged into it. However, the update needs to be sent by Tesla Motors.

It's ridiculous. In the USA, Tesla will often supply J1772 Clipper Creek chargers alongside the destination chargers. In Europe, they will install two or more chargers, some will be signed as Tesla only and some will be signed as for all EVs (presumably with the switch set to legacy mode on the open one). In both these regions Tesla recognises the need to support other EVs.

In Australia, it's the luck of the draw as to whether the destination charger is legacy mode enabled, and now they're not even making ones that *can* be legacy enabled. I have no idea how this policy is decided and why it's different in Australia.

Superchargers I understand, they are expensive but Tesla pays for them, they cover all the costs.

A few years ago I (despite not owning a Tesla) would recommend Tesla destination chargers to various sites - there was basically no fast charging infrastructure to speak of and Teslas were the only vehicles with the range to get to the various remote locations. Most sites would probably have baulked at even the basic $2k-$5k cost of paying for a pair of AC chargers plus installation. So in a way, Tesla destination chargers were the only practical suggestion. I certainly haven't for a while and am not doing that going forward!

The good thing is an existing Tesla destination charger that has been installed/wired up/mounted, is easy to swap for a Type 2 socket charger!

I did a personal inspection yesterday, and found two Tesla Wall Chargers https://shop.tesla.com/en_au/product/si ... or---gen-2 in the car park at the Visitors Centre. I see that the Council has been gifted $1560 of hardware, paid $10K for installation and will get to pay for the electricity for 3 years as well.

I had a sensible email discussion with the town planner. The council is trying to attract rich persons to the area to spend money. They used the AREMI data (NSW only available) to look at breeds of EVs in the capital (ie Sydney) and decided on continuing to work with Tesla Motors. The chargers are connected to the solar system on the Visitors Centre roof, so ratepayers like me aren't paying for the power most days.
The AREMI data can be found at https://nationalmap.gov.au/renewables/# ... OlL8W5QeBE and this comes back to my original question, from where do we get data about different types of EV in an area?
For those in other states, you might need to petition your roads authorities to put up their data too.

In a hopeful move for other EV users, it will be determined if the chargers are in legacy mode. I believe my correspondent is able to get this officially done.

Perhaps in the near future they can stick one of these in and programme it to charge all type 2 EVs?
