I want an EV, but what?

Very funny.

Under the tiny front bonnet the Imiev has a little 40AH 12v lead acid battery. It's used to boot power electronics, I guess some contactors and get the system going. Also used for lights and accessories when you have the ignition on but not in run mode. The DC/DC converter that runs off the main 360v traction bank takes over the loads and charges it the 12v lead acid once you have the car in run mode.

The car will not activate and go to Run mode with a totally dead 12v lead acid battery. It could be a 5 year old battery (though it might have been replaced)

As for accessing any info on the traction battery. The imiev has no display or data on this. The stereo display is just that a stereo and is not tied into the car in any way. You just have the fuel gauge and thats it

As I mentioned in a above post you need a android app (canion) and a bluetooth OBD scanner to get all the juicy data from the ECU.

The 12 volt battery supplies the power to the electronics required to connect the main battery, so unfortunately it is still possible to leave the lights on, flatten the little 12v battery and be unable to start just like a petrol car, despite having 16kwh of fully charged lithium batteries under the floor.
They had to use a jump starter pack to get mine going in the lot for a test drive!

Yep, if I get the car I'll certainly install one of those. A cheap android tablet fixed in the car with all the stats would be cool.

I purchased my 2010 from Ryde. If they tell you that the 12 volt battery has been replaced, check the date stamp yourself to confirm it's age. I Live in Sydney and have the Cannon app if you would like me to come and test a car in their lot let me know.

Yes, we rack up kms.....mine now has almost 23,000 on it, Rachel's had 11,000 when bought, about 24,000 when stacked.
Almost 35,000km between us.

Front tyres....as soon as the fronts wear out go for 155 Continental Ecocontact...half the price, much more stable, better turn in, no noticeable drop in range.

AEVA initiates another EV sale... again Image

If anyone is in Perth and is entertaining the thought of buying a production EV or embarking upon a conversion, come along to Electrikhana and test-drive a few. In fact, check out the AEVA website, follow the link and "Like" it on facebook. And book a ticket of course Image

http://aeva.asn.au/Perth and follow the links to Electrikhana!

ARGH!!!
Please pity me.
We test drove the 2010 iMiEV and SWMBO was happy, I got a bluetooth dongle to get the battery specs, and we were all set to go buy one.
Then SWMBO discovered that the 2010 doesn't have an ANCAP rating, and then she got all obsessed with 5 star ANCAP rating and has vetoed any car without one!
No iMiEV for me :-(

Thanks for all the help everyone, much appreciated. But it looks like there is no affordable EV option for us now, so I'm back to getting some crappy old ICE high maintenance fossil fuel chopping machine :-(
Shoot me now.

With 5 star ANCAP rating and only $27K, and maybe sub $400 to transport to Sydney, SWMBO is excited again:

Possibly some factory warranty left?
What about battery warranty?

What are is the 1 Star lost?

The 2012 has more airbags (side airbags) than the 2010

That Nissan leaf looks like a very good deal unless there is a issue

The offset crash test result was not great:
Quote from ANCAP:
Protection from serious chest and leg injury was marginal for the driver.

Sob sob. I didn't realise too many people interested in this one. The car got sold in the auction for 14k for added golf-ball features :(. I was hoping to get it for 5k because no one else is interested. How wrong I was.

I can hear those guys that attended the auction confused as well ("what car is that got sold for 14k") :D

Given that when you buy a ICE car the service station holds your $20,000 of petrol over say 10 years. When you buy a EV in a sense you are pre purchasing that as a upfront cost in the battery (but your purchasing it for say 50c lt bundled in the battery vs $1.30lt.

So that 20kwh+ of battery while in good health has value. Just like a big slab of steel or copper has value.

Though in saying that. I have seen Imievs 2012 models going for 7 - 8k buy now on US ebay. Try buying all the parts for that much even just the battery.

auctions in Aussie land are just becoming stupidly priced
