seems good but the title pic showing the complete unit with the black transormer on the wooden base looks like a Zivan or some kind of brand unit nothing like the inset pic below with the other black unit.

This is the worst kind of totally unregulated charger you can imagine. In fact, with the suggested 12 V transformer, it will be applying peaks of 17 V, less two diode drops, call it 15 V, to the battery. I'm not liking it. Proper 12 V battery chargers aren't that dear.
I think the black unit in the title picture is just his halogen transformer, not a Zivan charger.

Yeah I wouldn't recommend it.
And is only useful IF you have those parts laying around.
otherwise is cheaper to buy a proper one.
The one at the end of the story isn't cheap - just looking at the skiived heatsink...

I am building a cheap HV charger based on a computer SMPS. Its only 300Watts but it is stackable as required (For my case 4x300W = 1.2KW to charge a 6.5KW 650V Battery.
