Re: Starting to research vintage Mazda conversion. Help appreciated.
I’m wondering about motors and range etc, but haven’t done any calcs yet. http://www.evmotors.com.au/products/appguide.html https://www.evworks.com.au/netgain-impulse-9-series-dc-motor-suitable-for-veh https://www.evworks.com.au/zeva-mc600sp-mc600sp-motor-controller Pack size ~190Wh/km (including 8...

Re: Starting to research vintage Mazda conversion. Help appreciated.
Thanks. I’d like it to be a low(ish) budget conversion, but don’t want it to be cheap and nasty. The pic isn’t mine, just on off the net. It is in pretty good condition, but the wiring loom is shot, melted wires around the ignition switch and I suspect brittle insulation elsewhere. Otherwise it is i...

Starting to research vintage Mazda conversion. Help appreciated.
A few months ago I purchased a 1969 Mazda 1500. Fairly rare car, but I like the look of it. My plan is to get it registered on its current petrol engine to ensure it is running to a suitable level and then begin the (expected to be) long process to convert to electric. I’m wondering about motors and...

Re: Disposing of old lithium batteries
Is it true that lithium batteries are able to be recycled well? I thought I’d heard that, but others have said lithium batteries are going to be a big problem when we start getting lots of old electric cars.

I see Vic have $100 discount and ACT have 20% so hopefully NSW have similar sorts of discount.

Re: Newbie question about practicalities of charging and range
I'm all for EV's but just noting that our 6 year old Elantra manual goes down to somewhere like 5.4 l/100 at highway speeds (not sure about A/C use after all this time and up to high 9's around town. That's the exact opposite of my experience - at 50kph my Ranger (and previous Hilux, wife's Prado e...

Re: Newbie question about practicalities of charging and range
At this point in time I’d imagine electric cars are really a ‘city’ thing. Short drives, plenty of charging infrastructure etc. the more battery vehicles out there the more infrastructure will get built. The big energy companies know thugs are changing and will work towards supplying what the market...

Re: Tesla for sale 30k jeg in gumtree
For future reference (or for handy trivia) NSW no longer recognises any cars as repairable writeoffs. All writeoffs are statutory there. As far as I know there is an exception to this rule if you have owned the car for more than 90 days and it would otherwise be considered ‘repairable’. This would ...

Re: Starting my journey.
Vehicle procured. I found a Mazda 1500 locally for what I think was a good price. Short(ish) term now is to get it running on ICE and registered. Longer term aim is for it to be running on sparks for my eldest, now 13yo, to be able to learn to drive in it.

Re: HP in EV vs HP in ICE
As it is measuring the power at the wheels I can’t see there would be any handicap for a different source. There may be some rules developed about how long the vehicle should run for. I can’t imagine an EV full of super caps that runs at well over the 2400hp of the V8, but can only accelerate for 10...

Re: PHEV Flood Fail
Any chance of posting the links @HuffnPuff? My wife came across a couple of mentions of 400mm in discussions in other forums, but I was driving at the time and wasn't able to confirm if they were authoritative or speculative comments. FWIW, a work colleague who has a Volvo SUV (non-electric of cour...

I love that they’ve made a drop in module that will work with ‘any’ vehicle with the same engine transmission combo. The future is looking good for old cars!

Re: Powering the home from spare EV charge?
Thanks Gents. Yes, would consider only having one battery pack - with wheels and seats. 100km range would be better suited for weekend or day off travels, running errands and such runs up the kms. I can't see much joy in having to hook up a trailer to run the weekend errands. A 'normal' commute day ...

Powering the home from spare EV charge?
I haven't got an EV yet, I plan to build one though. One way of speeding the approval process from the Minister for Recreation and Finance might be if I can sell it on saving electricity costs. I could even purchase the batteries and get the home grid thing going while building the car. I wondered w...

Re: The Energy Retailers Strike Back. Will Cheap Off Peak Rates Kill Battery Storage?
With all the PV being installed it is changing the market. Old times they needed to ramp up production at the power station in the morning and then slow it down at the end of the peak period. They offset this a little by offering off peak hot water to encourage overnight usage. Now we have more and ...

Re: Home charging - solar diversion
Sounds like something I'd be interested in. Is there anything that would use excess solar for charging, then also use the vehicle battery to power the home and recharge off peak? ie if the car is in the garage during peak usage hours in the evening then it could power the house and recharge off peak...

Driving an EV in slow moving traffic?
I don't actually have an EV yet as I'm still in the early planning phase for a vintage vehicle conversion and my mind wanders while waiting for traffic to move ahead of me. When in heavy traffic how do you manage the throttle in an EV. In a manual ICE vehicle you can creep along in 1st or sometimes ...

Thanks for the shift! I've always been keen on older cars although it's been a few years since I've had one.
