Accessory battery

Is there a requirement for an accessories battery in individually constructed vehicles only? If you are only using it to run hazards and brakes I would think a very small battery would suffice. The Vectrix only runs a DC:DC converter off the main pack, but like others have said, the larger EV's requ...

Solar (thermal) HWS vs PVs

Those 2.5Kw grid connect inverters are actually illegal to use unfortunately, their anti-islanding function locks out for 30 seconds, not 60 (and they are transformer based and really, really heavy) and have some serious reliability issues. Great to put a chain on and use as a boat anchor though :) ...

Solar (thermal) HWS vs PVs

I wonder how you would go doing this - some sort of an MPPT reg would work well here for efficiency, you might be surprised how little power you would dissipate into the HWS when you are that far from the peak power point of those panels. You would be better off (efficiency wise) running a grid tie ...

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner - what voltage is the 2Kw elcon?

I'd love one of the 1.5Kw 153V ones, but they wont fit where I have some room (only the Kingpan charger will - sigh!

Dreamers look here! (Aston Martin DB-4)

Didn't they print a couple of DB4's for the last James Bond movie to destroy? Rings a bell.

I think he needs a larger printer somehow. At least if he is printing with ABS he can glue the bits together with acetone.

Solar (thermal) HWS vs PVs

So Tassie went to the 8c feed-in tariff as well - we've got the same here in NSW, so makes sense to put the power to use somewhere. Would be great if you could control a gas storage HWS like you can an electric. I'm still trying to figure if there is anything clever I can do - when it dies I think I...

Someone has informed me that the AGM for this year (being 2013) is in Canberra on the 12th, not on the 27th.

Ahem. Image

As to why they have actually cancelled it - no information.

Wow - looks like a nice score!

I had planned a solar backup setup myself (I got a set of 12 X 12V 150AH Ritars that I received for payment from someone who abandoned an EV project) but finding a decent inverter proved difficult.

POSTPONED to 2014 - AWWWW.....

No explanation as to why, but the Sydney AGM is on the 27th of October (same date) - would assume that there would be very few exhibitors.

I'd have a look at the Sydney AEVA chapter, their AGM is in October (27th), so you would have a critical mass of very smart people to help you out locally.

Is this the reason why the Hunter EV Festival has been postponed?

Ouch. That sounds nasty. Are they microcontroller based? I'd love to have a good look at the insides of these, reverse engineering the design would be interesting. I would probably say that being Chinese made the labels on the IC's would have been sanded off. Are you interested in selling the dead o...

Cheap 144V chargers

Since my chargers have died (600W BMSBattery units) I have been running a very basic capacitive divider charger - it isn't isolated, and had an extremely poor power factor. (0.3) I've narrowed my decision down to either an Elcon (TC/Chennic) or Kingpower. Both end up roughly the same price: $450 Elc...

Warrantee from a chinese vendor - funny :) Unfortunatly when they break, the vendor isn't interested in helping you out, but helpfully offers (sometimes) a discount for a new one, and then makes it back on shipping. I was looking at their 2000W version, but is a bit expensive for what it is - $250 f...

eRider goes up in flames!

I bought some of these as well for the Vectrix, there was one that was very low (1.5AH) and some that had good capacity, but poor internal resistance. The BMS design was - well - pretty ordinary. The HVC was in two stages - the first stage started shunting the cell at 3.65V, and the opto fired at ar...

I meant to build something for the endurance race this year but time got away on me again!

The Erider scooters were initially imported with 40AH Thundersky batteries, some had BMS units (that were not very well QC tested - some don't shunt, some don't trigger their optos etc).

They later came with GBS cells which apparently improved their performance and reliablity.
