$8/L for petrol!

I certainly hope so we see a big shift towards transport powered by renewable sources in the coming years - even if it's simply as a result of ever-worsening fuel prices. Truth be told it's all our commuter vehicles which are the easiest problem to tackle. As many early-adopters are already demonstr...

I know I tend to be cynical about such things but I believe the real reason there is no rebate (or government support/initiatives) for EVs - and perhaps never will be - is because the government would get no ongoing revenue from EVs, whereas LPG is a significantly taxed consumable resource. The prim...

WarP8 vs ADC?

Hi Lowndsy (and others waiting for motors), Yes, get your backorders asap in if you plan on doing a conversion anytime soon! No downpayment needed, it's just for a place in line. As you can imagine, the delays with the motors have been *very* inconvenient for a lot of people. I'm doing my best to ge...

The EV pledge

Unfortunately that's exactly the mindset held by the vast majority of people I talk to, but it's no excuse! http://forums.aeva.asn.au/smileys/smiley17.gif Here's the solution: (a) Don't skimp on your EV (i.e use lithium batteries) and you'll be able to travel much farther than 40km. (And hills aren'...

The EV pledge

Well my rant in another thread reminded me of something that's been on my mind lately.. I propose we start an AEVA petition, simply stating that "We, the undersigned, pledge never to buy another vehicle powered by fossil fuels" ? (Unless it's for conversion it to electric, I suppose!) So who's game?...

As always I have some opinions on the subject too... http://forums.aeva.asn.au/smileys/smiley2.gif And yes it's a bit of a rant again. Firstly, I don't think the automakers see it as being in their interest to make electric cars. Firstly it is an unknown market, so would be seen as a risky venture. ...

WarP8 vs ADC?

Hi CometBoy, Well as a NetGain distributor OF COURSE I am going to tell you that the Warp is a better way to go! But let me elaborate on that a little.. Firstly the Warp 8 is actually a discontinued motor, NetGain recommend the ImPulse 9 as the best substitute. It has the same mounting pattern as th...

I think your math is slightly out, Matt: 1200kg @ 0.5G = 1200*9.81*0.5 = 5886N 185/65R14 are 0.298m radius, so required torque at rear wheels = 5886*0.298 = 1754Nm 4000Nm to the rears would be over 1G acceleration! (You'd need very good tires.. but it sure would be fun http://forums.aeva.asn.au/smil...

Progress on the MX5 conversion

Exciting news: I just took the MX5 for its first test drive as an EV! It all seems to be working nicely, other than the Kelly controller which is unbelievably wimpy. Fortunately Rob Mason has lent me a Curtis 1231C I can use to get the car licensed, or until I get around to building a controller for...

Rant for the Week: It's Not All About The Money

A common theme I see thrown about in EV circles is the perceived need to justify a conversion economically. For example, a good friend of mine, one of the most environmentally conscious people I know, unfortunately feels obliged to prove to himself (and his wife) that an EV will work out cheaper in ...

Ah sorry to hear it.. But it does reiterate how far we have to go before we achieve public acceptance of EVs! It reminds me of a good quote from WKTEC: "All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident." - Art...

Vacuum formers in Perth

They probably will end up being a cut sheet, with a frame around the edge..

Just a passing fancy, I thought it might be nice to get some vacuum formed covers for the boxes (i.e with wraparound edges so they seal tight to the box below).

Vacuum formers in Perth

Hi all,

Does anyone know of any vacuum formers (for polycarbonate/lexan) in Perth who don't mind doing odd jobs?

Pretty simple job; I'm just looking to get some covers done for my battery boxes.

Analog 0-5v Throttle Position Sensor's

Hi guys, Pot boxes.. 0-5V type throttles are usually better than 0-5K because it allows you to use non-resistive throttles. The Curtis PB6 is a 2-wire 0-5K throttle, so you can't use it with a 0-5V as is, but you can disassemble them and convert it to a 3-wire throttle (just add a third wire to the ...

so, is anyone willing to go on TV?

I agree, getting EVs into the public eye should be a high priority for AEVA, and it's especially timely at present while everyone's complaining about fuel prices! I don't like cameras myself (they might steal my soul?) but I'm going to dob in Tuarn Brown, Dave Waplington or Rob Mason for the job. Th...

Yes, the ZEVA controller is on its way soon. I've had a prototype working on the testbench for a while now but the project went on the backburner when the Kellys arrived. Since they don't seem to be working out so well, the ZEVA controller is back on the high priority list - hopefully I'll have some...

Hi Brett, The only two controllers to do this are the Curtis 1231C and 1221C, and very few people like it! They switch from the relatively inaudible 15kHz down to the annoying 1500Hz for low throttle settings as a protection mechanism in motors with high inductance (so the FETs don't have to switch ...

Yes if it were driveable I would have snuck it down there tonight on the old plates, but as usual things have taken longer than I would have liked!

I expect I'll take it down to Welshpool, they're not too far from me and are probably the most knowledgeable about electrics.

Electric Mororcycle has officially begun!!!

Where did the figure of 33Nm @ 300A come from? The torque constant of the ME0709 is 0.20 Nm/A ( http://www.zeva.com.au/media/Mars_ME0709.png ) so at 300A it'll put out ~60Nm of torque -> 1090N at the wheel -> 4.78m/s^2 -> 0-100 in 5.81s. Of course this is neglecting (a) transmission losses and (b) t...

Electric Mororcycle has officially begun!!!

Richo: I think you're comparing apples and oranges, the power curve of an electric is so vastly different to a petrol engine, peak torque is at zero rpm instead of 8200rpm (for the Ninja 250R). Maximum power for the Ninja 250R's engine is 24kW @ 11000rpm. Maximum power for the Mars is about 20kW at ...

1) Vacuum pumps - yes! I have some coming soon, the MES-DEA 70/6E to be precise. I've got one in my MX5 already and it works nicely. Compact, relatively quiet, and with integrated vacuum switch to simplify installation. A vacuum tank is recommended but not necessary as they are happy to turn on and ...
