Re: PIP-4048MS inverter

Is it worth following this up with mpp solar or move fwd with buying another unit and have this unit repaired in Aus? I was planning on a parallel system plus I will be needing a second independent system soon anyway. I can't really advise you on such decisions. Except to say that I don't see that ...

Re: PIP-4048MS inverter

Have a problem with 72.70 the Max. Charging Current setting has become a max current setting for solar charger so if you set it at 30amps that is all the solar charger will put out instead of being max charge to battery. Only found this out because I loaded them up to 4500watts and was getting a ba...

Re: PIP-4048MS inverter

I finally changed the strings this morning to 2 strings of 2 panels was 2 strings of 3. The problem persisted with the relay clicking away. After approx an hr the charging started. OK. So now we know there is definitely something wrong with your machine. This is definitely not expected behaviour. M...

Re: PIP-4048MS inverter

lion6912 , You do not need to equalise this battery at 2.7 V per cell. I believe that is a misreading of the manual. I found an English version of the manual here: http://www.crownaku.com/Resim/Upload/tds6vcr220hdeng.pdf I believe it is only saying, as a safety condition, you must stop charging if ...

Re: PIP-4048MS inverter

Here's a brief explanation of the practical meaning of the difference between inverter ratings of 4 kW/5 kVA and 5 kW/5 kVA. 1. AC appliances that have some kind of heating element, and those that do not contain motors, typically draw the same amount of VA as W. These are called resistive loads. 2. ...

Good Afternoon all, I have been watching and reading this thread almost from the start and am truly impressed by everyone's efforts to reverse engineer the schematics and firmware of these units. Welcome, Jordan. Thanks for the kind words. I note that by far the bulk of that work has been done by C...

Re: PIP-4048MS inverter

Great post Coulomb, about the undocumented V220, V230 and V240 commands. A model of clarity. Except for one problem. They don't work. :) At least, not on my inverter. BTW, the PIP never shows ACK or NAK followed by 2 weird characters. It always shows: (ACK9 or (NAKss And I note that your TeraTerm ke...

Re: PIP-4048MS inverter

Wanted: 74.xx firmware update file It appears, based on this South African thread , and this Voltronic Power web page (in the Specifications tab), that the single-MPPT 4 kW 5 kVA model (e.g. PIP-4048MS) will not be available in future, being replaced by the single-MPPT 5 kW 5 kVA model (e.g. PIP-50...

Re: 18v Power tool batteries ?

Hi Daniel, It's not a completely crazy idea. :) I certainly wouldn't put more than 5 x 18 V modules in series, due to concerns over lethal voltages and inadequate insulation. But then you need to look at how many such strings-of-5 you would have to put in parallel so they could handle the peak curre...

Re: PIP-4048MS inverter

The OC voltage reported by the Pip is about 130v Once mppt kicks in with charging it drops to about 110v From this graph you can see that Volts sits about 130v until about 10am the mppt/charging kicked in. ... Re: PIP-4048MS inverter

If the inverter is not drawing any current from the PV array, then it will be the OC voltage. If the inverter is doing maximum power point tracking, then it will be the MPPT voltage. You can tell what state it is in by looking at the PV power readout. If it's zero, it's open circuit.

Re: PIP-4048MS inverter

Thanks again for your response. I have had this setup running for 12+ months and didn't see this behaviour last summer. Of course you didn't have too low voltage near mid-day last summer, because you have 3 panels in series. Instead you have too high voltage near dawn in winter. If you had 2 x 60-c...

Re: PIP-4048MS inverter

Thanks for this response. This sure does make a lot of sense and takes a load of my mind. Will I need to consider cable size with more amps? Yes. You should ensure that your array cable can carry the short circuit current of all 3 strings continuously. You should also ensure that your array cable d...

Hi Alan, Thanks for giving complete details of your system, both hardware and firmware, including batteries and solar panels. That makes it much easier to help folks with problems. 185 W panels are almost certainly 72-cell panels. Can you count 6 cells by 12 cells on each panel? If so, you need to r...

Re: PIP-4048MS inverter

That's a nicely done drawing, Coulomb. There's more than one weird thing about that circuit. It looks like it was designed by an amateur. I count 12 parts that are completely unnecessary since they can either be omitted or replaced by a PCB track, sometimes requiring a change in the value or connect...
