Re: I-miev repair

I am thinking of re-cycling the original fuse, by drilling small holes through the end caps, and threading a piece of 20amp fuse wire, and then resoldering he holes closed. (the kind you buy at bunnings for older homes with fuse boxes). The High voltage fuse in the IMIEV has sand inside that contai...

Re: PIP-4048MS inverter

A picture can be worth a thousand words. Coulomb kindly pointed me to an early schematic showing an early arrangement of the AC relays in the PIP4048-MS. [Edit: The later arrangement, still prior to 73.00, has only 3 relays. It seems the inverter relay is omitted.] Below is my best guess at the pres...

Re: Arvio 3.5kWh drop-in-battery-replacement supercapacitor on sale

Looks like vapourware to me. Did you find any product specs that would allow one to calculate watt-hours per litre? I didn't. But at least they are not making ridiculous claims about watt-hours per kilogram (less than a tenth of that of lithium-ion batteries). And when they write: “In the long term,...

Re: Arvio 3.5kWh drop-in-battery-replacement supercapacitor on sale

I agree 100% with everything you wrote above, except this: It is NOT good enough to say "but look how it performs at the terminals". That doesn't answer the question of validating the "super capacitor" label in the name. I'd like to understand why you say that, because AFAIK it is obvious to everyon...

Re: The need for blocking diodes in a battery charging solar array?

That bit about nuisance fuse blowing not happening on systems installed in Australia could be a little stretch of the truth, the system I've just installed also has a back to grid system installed and nuisance fuse failures was the reason I got the job to do the off grid install in the first place ...

Re: The need for blocking diodes in a battery charging solar array?

I'm sorry Terry, but your description of the behaviour of currents and voltages seems to bear little resemblance to reality. And it took me a while to realise you were talking about schottky diodes. :) We're talking about solar panels, not lamps. The definition of a PV string is not mine. It is stan...

Re: The need for blocking diodes in a battery charging solar array?

These panels are sourced from the same suppliers as we use. They have also gone to using blocking diodes. Did they say why? You haven't said what make and model of solar charge controller (SCC) you're using, or whether it has some means of preventing backflow from the battery into the panels at nig...

Re: Arvio 3.5kWh drop-in-battery-replacement supercapacitor on sale

Ah, now this is the confusion, there are two units available, one is 3550 Wh, and the other is 7100 Wh, and I think it's the 7100 Wh which has the 1,200 devices, ... I think you'll find that Arvio have not imported the 7100 Wh module at all. I think they were fairly clear that there are 1200 of tho...

Re: Arvio 3.5kWh drop-in-battery-replacement supercapacitor on sale

Agree, even basic examination, sans simming, makes clear a domestic E storage will benefit from more supercaps and less battery array, maybe 75:25 (at least it won't hurt, except costs more), while a regularly used car would maybe suffice with 90:10 (thereabout), an e-bike 100% caps. Except that gr...

Re: The need for blocking diodes in a battery charging solar array?

Hi Terry. This looks like good advice re semi-flexible panels. Apparently there are some reputable brands. They use SunPower cells. https://www.solar4rvs.com.au/buying/buyer-guides/choosing-flexible-solar-panels/comparison-of-good-and-bad-lightweight-flexible-so/ But the whole idea of using somethin...

Re: Arvio 3.5kWh drop-in-battery-replacement supercapacitor on sale

So are you suggesting that Arvio completely failed to notice 160 rectangular things in the same box as the 1200 cylindrical things? Or that they saw them, but were too stupid to suspect they might be the supercapacitors, and so completely failed to mention them, or test them, even after we pointed o...

Re: The need for blocking diodes in a battery charging solar array?

Are you saying the problem began with mechanical damage to one panel, which then caused a cascading failure of most of the other panels by overheating? Or could the first panel have failed in the same way as the others, and just happened to be the first one to go? You don't mention anything about fu...

Re: The need for blocking diodes in a battery charging solar array?

Interesting - and I presume that if you do pop a fuse on a series string, you've probably set the arrays out wrong? After all, replacing the fuse would simply let it happen again, and again, until you got up and pruned that tree? Good question, but no. A string fuse won't blow merely because of dif...

Since the publication of AS/NZS 5033 in 2005, blocking diodes have not been required for the pu...

Re: PIP-4048MS inverter

Hello again guys, is there any way to change the min.solar voltage from 40 vdc to 55 vdc? What do you mean by the min solar voltage? What makes you think it can go down to 40 volts? My understanding is that the minimum voltage on the solar inputs that the PIP's SCC can maximum-power-point-track, is...
